Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What word describes the process where someone creates a fake social media profile to defraud, abuse or deceive?

Answer: Catfishing

As social media websites came into wider popularity, unfortunately, so did scams involving them. The 2010 documentary film 'Catfish' explored this phenomenon, following a young man's romantic relationship on Facebook with a woman who turned out to have been lying about her identity and life.

The word 'catfish' was used due to an anecdote used by the husband of the film's 'catfish' where fisherman would put catfish into tanks with live cod to 'keep them interested' - they would otherwise not be likely to survive the shipping.
2. Which book, written by Suzanne Collins and released in 2009, is the second in the 'Hunger Games' series?

Answer: Catching Fire

The film adaptation of this book starring Jennifer Lawrence was released in 2013. In this book, protagonist Katniss Everdeen had just won the dystopian last-man-standing 'Hunger Games' and was experiencing the aftermath of that victory. As her acts of defiance had inspired rebellion in the country, she had to convince the nation that she acted instead out of love for co-winner Peeta, else her family would be executed. Due to a twist, past winners were called to compete in another round of the Hunger Games, putting Katniss in the fray once more.
3. Which British comedienne born in 1968 starred as Donna Noble in the 'Doctor Who' franchise?

Answer: Catherine Tate

Catherine Tate is probably best known for starring in 'The Catherine Tate Show', a sketch show not unlike 'Little Britain' where she would lampoon certain types of people. Her most notorious characters were Nan, an uncomfortably frank older woman with a contagious laugh, and Lauren, a rebellious schoolgirl who would repeatedly ask 'Am I bothered?'.

In 'Doctor Who', her character Donna Noble was not unlike some of her sketch characters as she was an outspoken Londoner. Unlike the Tenth Doctor's previous companions, Noble's relationship with the Doctor was warm-hearted and platonic.
4. Which of these royal Catherines was born Princess Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst in 1729?

Answer: Catherine the Great

Catherine the Great was best known as the Empress of Russia, but she was actually born in the Kingdom of Prussia in what would now be Poland. Despite being a princess, her family was actually poor: it was wealthy relatives of the family who bankrolled her rise to power. In 1744, she converted - against her father's wishes - to Eastern Orthodox under the name Catherine (or Ekaterina).
5. Which of these singers or bands began their music career in Wales?

Answer: Catatonia

This '90s band was famously fronted by Cerys Matthews, who also notoriously sung a duet of 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' with Tom Jones. It was formed by Cerys Matthews and Mark Roberts in Cardiff in 1992, and the name was reportedly inspired by Matthews' works in a mental health facility.

The 'International Velvet' album was the most commercially successful album in the UK, and the band broke up in 2001 after a two-year break. Matthews had reportedly been contending with depression and drug-related issues, though went on to have a long-standing solo career.
6. Which of these is a tyrosine-derived neurotransmitter, with adrenaline and dopamine being two examples?

Answer: Catecholamine

Catecholamines are simply named for their component parts. A catechol is a benzene ring with two hydroxyl groups, and an amine is a nitrogen-based compound derived from ammonia. They play a role in metabolism, thermogenesis, hormone regulation, stress-response and in nervous system functions. Adrenaline is particularly associated with fight-or-flight responses, and dopamine with the brain's reward systems.
7. Which of these has been known as an inflammation of the mucous membranes often found in the throat and sinuses?

Answer: Catarrh

This is definitely a nuisance 'cat'. The symptoms typically include having a runny throat, congested sinuses, persistent cough, dulled sense of taste and smell and sometimes hearing loss. It is usually not considered a condition of its own, rather a symptom of other conditions such as a cold or nasal polyps.
8. Which of these can be an eye disorder or a waterfall?

Answer: Cataract

The word 'cataract' derives from the Latin 'cataracta' (waterfall) which in turn derives from the Greek 'katarhaktes'. The component words of 'katarhaktes' roughly translate to 'down' and 'rushing'. It also has an alternate sense of being a portcullis, which is likely where the association with clouded lenses - an obstruction of sight - came from.
9. Which of these destructive 'cats' was also a 'World of Warcraft' expansion released in 2009?

Answer: Cataclysm

'World of Warcraft: Cataclysm' was released in 2009 and was the third expansion for the massively multiplayer online role-playing game. In this expansion, the world of Azeroth had been ravaged by the elements, and players had to explore the forces that would threaten to destroy the planet.

Its main antagonist was Deathwing the Destroyer, a truly immense dragon: in one of the final encounters players had to destroy armor plates on his back whilst he was flying.
10. Which of these describes when a substitutive word such as a pronoun is used that refers to a later word in a sentence, also known as a forward reference?

Answer: Cataphora

A cataphora is the opposite of an anaphora, where the pronoun or substitute word is placed later in the sentence. An example of a cataphora might be: "Once it landed, the bird let out a terrifying squall". In a more general sense, an endophora is an expression referring to something that appears elsewhere in a sentence.
