Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With which country is tartan usually associated?

Answer: Scotland

The majority of Scottish kilts feature a tartan design, and have done for many years although there are a few that show a plaid design. The main difference between the two is that a tartan is a registered design, usually associated with a clan or an area, whereas plaid is an unregistered pattern with no significance.

In Scotland a blanket with a checked pattern is often referred to as a plaid.
2. From which language is the word 'tartan' most likely derived?

Answer: French

The word, 'tartan' is believed to come from the French, 'tartarin', meaning cloth of the Tartar.
It has been suggested that the word is derived from the Gaelic word, 'tarsainn', meaning "across" but scholars believe that the French explanation is much more likely as as recently as 1830, tartan was described as a plain unpatterned cloth, while the patterned kilts worn by Scots highlanders were known as "breacan".
3. First registered in 2018, "The British Bulldog" is a tartan designed to honour which former UK Prime Minister?

Answer: Winston Churchill

"The British Bulldog" was designed and registered by Margi Lawson and features colours associated with Churchill and his image as the defiant British Bulldog.
The colours featured are blue and white for his trademark 'Dickie Bow', dark grey for his Homburg hat, light brown for his cigar and black to represent the depression which plagued him throughout his life, which he used to refer to as 'The Black Dog'.
4. "Balmoral" tartan has been worn by every British monarch since Queen Victoria, but who designed the pattern in 1853?

Answer: Prince Albert

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert purchased Balmoral Castle in 1848 and set about having it decorated in a Scots baronial style. As part of these refurbishments, Queen Victoria designed a tartan called "Victoria" while Prince Albert designed "Balmoral" with its distinctive grey, black and red colours.
5. The earliest Scottish tartan dates back to the third century, but in 2004, tartan cloth dating back to sixth century B.C. was found in the Hallstatt Salt Mines of which country?

Answer: Austria

The earliest Scottish tartan is the "Falkirk" tartan, a tartan of a simple check design which was discovered being used as a stopper in an earthenware jar containing almost 2,000 Roman coins.
In 1978, a 3,000 year old mummy known as the "Cherchen Man" was discovered in the Taklamakan Desert of Northwest China wearing tartan leg coverings, and the discovery of the tartan at Hallstatt Salt Mines adds credence to the belief that tartan is far from a Scottish invention.
6. In 2012, the Walt Disney Company registered the "DunBroch" tartan to celebrate the release of which movie?

Answer: Brave

Disney actually created three new tartans for the movie, "DunBroch", "Dingwall", and "MacGuffin" but only registered the "DunBroch". The colours of this tartan for Merida's clan were ocean blue for the North Sea, navy blue for the eventual unity of the four clans, scarlet for bloodshed during the clan wars, green for the Scottish Highlands and gray for the Scottish people.
This was actually the second time that Disney had registered a tartan, also doing so in 1942 for Clan McDuck.
7. In which year was the Dress Act passed in Scotland, banning the wearing of tartan, except by Highlands regiments of the British Army?

Answer: 1746

Due to the wearing of tartan being so closely associated with Jacobites who supported restoring Roman Catholic King James to the throne, the wearing of it was banned. The only exception was Highland regiments such as 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland, also known as the Black Watch. The ban was lifted in 1782 due largely to the efforts of the Highland Society of London.
8. Many American states and Canadian provinces and territories have official tartans. Which Canadian province has a tartan of green for the forests, gold for the wheat fields combined with blue for the provincial colour?

Answer: Alberta

Nunavut is the only one of Canada's provinces and territories without a regional tartan, although just the thought of wearing a kilt in Iqaluit makes me shiver. The country also has its own tartan, called the Maple Leaf tartan, consisting of green, gold, red and brown to represent the colours of the maple leaf as it changes through the seasons.
9. The 1822 visit to Scotland of which monarch gave rise to the boom in tartan, which continues to this day?

Answer: King George IV

George IV became the first reigning monarch to visit Scotland in 171 years and for the celebrations involved with the visit, organiser Sir Walter Scott, extolled attendees to wear their tartan finery. At the Grand Ball in his honour, George also wore a kilt and many Scots were influenced to trace their heritage and find the tartan of their clan.

This led to tartan and the kilt becoming the national dress of the country.
10. Which Edinburgh-based band of the 1970s were known as the Tartan Horde due to the amount of tartan on their clothing?

Answer: Bay City Rollers

Bay City Rollers were massive in UK in the 1970s with 11 top 20 hits between 1971 and 1977, including two number ones with "Bye, Bye, Baby" and "Give A Little Love" (both 1975). In USA and Canada, they hit number one with "Saturday Night" (1975), but this track failed to chart in UK.
Fans of the band, mainly teenage girls, copied the band's dress style and calf length tartan trousers, coupled with silk tartan scarves, were a normal sight on UK streets.
