Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which port is capital of the Netherlands?

Answer: Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the capital, although it is not the seat of government which is in The Hague. Amsterdam is home to The Rijksmuseum, which houses Rembrandt van Rijn's "Night Watch" and the House of Bols, which is the oldest distillery in the world.
2. Of which Nottingham football (soccer) team was Brian Clough manager 1975-1993?

Answer: Forest

Cloughie took the reins at Forest after being sacked by Leeds United after just 44 days. He led Forest to a league title, two league cups and two European cups during his reign.
3. Pre decimalisation, which British coin had a value of one pound and one shilling, or 21 shillings?

Answer: Guinea

The guinea was a gold coin first minted in 1663, and originally worth one pound (20 shillings), but changes in the price of gold caused the value of the coin to fluctuate, occasionally as high as 30 shillings. In 1717, in order to end the confusion, the value was fixed at 21 shillings. The last guinea was minted in 1814.
4. Which Jack was the author of "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang"?

Answer: London

Jack London was an American author who set much of his work in the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897, which he himself had taken part in. Apart from the classics in the question, his short story "To Build A Fire", concerning a man and his dog visiting friends in the Yukon is a must-read.
5. Saint Helier is the capital city of which island?

Answer: Jersey

Jersey, as part of the Channel Islands along with Guernsey, Alderney and Sark, is not part of the UK, although the UK is responsible for the defence and international relations of the islands. The capital takes its name from a sixth century hermit who healed a lame man on the island, and according to legend, still had the strength after starving himself for 13 years to pick up his head and walk to the shore after being beheaded.
6. In 1862, the Battle of Puebla took place in which country, giving rise to celebrations on "Cinco de Mayo"?

Answer: Mexico

At the Battle of Puebla, the well armed French forces, numbering 8000 men, attacked the city of Puebla, only to be heavily defeated by a Mexican force less than half their number. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the state of Puebla but not heavily celebrated in the rest of Mexico.

It is widely celebrated in USA, but should not be confused with Mexico's Independence Day, which is September 16th.
7. Jane Austen and Charles Dickens were both born in this English county which is the closest one to the Isle of Wight. Which is it?

Answer: Hampshire

Hampshire is bordered by Dorset, Wiltshire, Surrey and West Sussex as well as the English Channel/Solent Strait, which provides a two mile boundary between Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The county is known for South Downs National Park, which covers almost 1700 square kilometres and in 2011 became the newest National Park in England.
8. For her performance in "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" (1969), which Susannah was nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress?

Answer: York

York lost out in both nominations to Goldie Hawn who won for her portrayal of Toni Simmons in the comedy "Cactus Flower". During her career, she played Superman's mother in three of the franchise movies as well as playing Mrs. Cratchit in 1984s "A Christmas Carol". On TV, she was well known to UK viewers for a recurring role in medical dramas "Casualty" and "Holby City".
9. Copenhagen, capital of Denmark, is located partly on the island of Amager, but mainly on which other island?

Answer: Zealand

Zealand is the most populated island in Denmark, and is connected to Amager by several bridges. It is also connected to Funen by The Great Belt Bridge and Masnedø by the Masnedsund Bridge. The island is home to The Viking Ship Museum at Roskilde and visitors can also take a stroll around Louisiana, not the American state, but a museum of contemporary art.
10. What is the common bond?

Answer: New

All can be prefixed by "new". New Amsterdam was the 17th century Dutch name for what is now New York, while the New Forest is nowhere near USA as it's on the south coast of England and is famous for its wildlife including the New Forest pony. New Guinea is the world's second largest island and is divided into Papua New Guinea and Western New Guinea, and New London, whilst once one of the world's busiest whaling ports is now a Port of Entry on the Thames River in Connecticut, as well as being home to the United States Coastguard Academy. Continuing through USA, we come to New Jersey, the state on the east coast, New Mexico which with Utah, Colorado, and Arizona forms the "four corners", New Hampshire, which forms part of New England and New York which is also known as the "Big Apple". Leaving USA and travelling over the South Pacific Ocean, we arrive at New Zealand, who have been in the news in 2018, quite rightly complaining that they are often omitted from world maps.
