Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals: Which of the following mammals can sleep up to 22 hours a day?

Answer: koalas

Koalas, marsupial mammals, are the longest-sleeping mammals, at up to 22 hours a day, with an average of about 18 hours. In contrast, elephants sleep about two hours a day. Giraffes sleep about 1.9 hours a day, in five to ten minute intervals. Deer tend to sleep in 30 minute cycles, i.e., 30 seconds to a few minutes of dozing followed by a brief alert period, and then more dozing and more alert periods, with one minute equivalent to two human sleep hours. Come to think of it, have you ever seen a deer doze?
2. History: Which of the following ancient military leaders committed suicide?

Answer: Hannibal

Interestingly, not one of the above leaders was killed in battle. Hannibal of Carthage committed suicide in 183 B.C., rather than fall into Roman hands. Julius Caesar was murdered (et tu, Brute?). Genghis Khan fell off his horse while hunting, and Attila the Hun died of a bloody nose on his wedding night - no Hun-eymoon for him!
3. Humanities: Which of the following is NOT a Roman god or goddess?

Answer: Loki

Loki represents the Norse god of mischief. Bacchus is the Roman god of wine; his Greek counterpart is Dionysus. Venus is the goddess of love, and a song by both Frankie Avalon and Bananarama; her Greek counterpart is Aphrodite. Vulcan is god of fire, including volcanoes and metal-working (no, not Mr. Spock's home planet); his Greek counterpart is Hephaestus.
4. Brainteasers: Fill in the blank: Sinclair_____ Carroll.

Answer: Lewis

Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was an American novelist and playwright who authored books like "Babbitt" "Main Street" and "Elmer Gantry". He became the first writer in the United States to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930.
Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) was born Charles Dodgson. He was an English writer and logician who is responsible for giving the world "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" in 1865.
5. Celebrities: Which actor was a regular on "CSI" and in the movie "Apocalypse Now"?

Answer: Laurence Fishburne

Laurence Fishburne played the role of Dr. Raymond Langston on the original "CSI" set in Las Vegas from 2008-2011, although his character did have cameos on both "CSI": Miami" and "CSI: NY" in 2009. In 1978 he played Tyrone Miller in "Apocalypse Now", and he was also Morpheus in "The Matrix" trilogy (1999-2003).
The other choices all appeared on "CSI" with Danson as D.B. Russell, Peterson as Gil Grissom and George Eads as Nick Stokes.
6. Hobbies: How many herbs and spices are blended into KFC?

Answer: 11

In his original recipe Colonel Harland Sanders (1890-1980), of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame, seasoned his chickens with 11 herbs and spices. Would you like to know which spices? Even if you said "no", here they are: oregano, chili powder, sage, basil, marjoram, pepper, salt, paprika, onion salt, garlic powder and 'Accent' for that delicious MSG flavor. Since his death, others have tried to replace his character, e.g., Norm Macdonald but, somehow, it just hasn't been the same!
7. For Children: On the cartoon "Kim Possible", which of the following was NOT a nemesis?

Answer: Ron Stoppable

Ron Stoppable (and his naked mole rat, Rufus) played sidekick and best friend to the indomitable hero Kim Possible. Kim's main rival (or arch-nemesis) was Dr. Drakken, a scientist with light blue skin, who wanted to take over the world (what else)? Shego was originally Dr. Drakken's assistant until she decided to go solo with her evil plans. Duff Killigan was an irate Scotsman who took up crime after he was banned from pro golf; his gimmick was hitting exploding golf balls.
8. Geography: What is the capital of New Zealand?

Answer: Wellington

Wellington is the capital and political center of New Zealand, a country which has more sheep than people. Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand, and Christchurch is the largest urban area in the South Island, i.e., the second largest city. Wellington (after the Duke of Wellington) has a large Maori population; the Maori name for Wellington is Te-Wanga-nui-a-Tara, and the Maori name for New Zealand is Aoteroa (anyone want to buy a vowel?).
9. General Knowledge: What was the name of both the site of the "pleasure dome" in Kubla Khan and a 1980 movie starring Olivia Newton-John?

Answer: Xanadu

"Kubla Khan, or, A Vision in a Dream: A Fragment" was a poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and published in 1816. Coleridge also penned "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" which was written in 1797-1798. Shangri-La is a fictional place described in James Hilton's 1933 novel. The book "Utopia" was written in
1516 by Sir Thomas Moore. "Walden" is a book by Henry David Thoreau.

For Senior Citizens only: if "The Nanny" had also been involved, the question would include: Kubla, Fran and Ollie. Hope there's someone out there who will get this joke!
10. Entertainment: According to "Forbes Fictional Fifteen", who would NOT make the list of richest fictional characters?

Answer: Peter Parker

Peter Parker (aka "Spider-man") still goes to school, lives with his aunt and has trouble making ends meet. His Uncle Ben was killed, if you recall, and he had to get a job with the Daily Bugle to help pay the bills.

As of 2012, Bruce Wayne's net worth was estimated at $6.9 billion.
Mr. Burns estimated net worth (as of July 2015) was $16.8 billion.
Scrooge McDuck comes in at $8.2 billion on one list and $65.4B on another.
Caution: these totals vary widely depending on the list - it IS fiction, after all!
