Question 1 of 10
1. Our budding (literally!) romance begins with the traditional dozen roses, so beautiful and perfect. However, watch out for more than thorns, because the common rose insecticide Carbaryl has been shown to be both toxic and teratogenic in animal studies. What does "teratogenic" mean? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. What could be more romantic than watching fireworks with one's beloved? Why, dozens of old movies show fireworks as a euphemism for consummated passion! (This is why they're OLD movies...nowadays anyone over 17 gets to see the whole thing onscreen.) However, watch out, because a typical commercial fireworks display has sound levels equal to about which of the following? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Well, after the roses and most especially the fireworks, it may be time to get engaged. Many engagements begin with a diamond solitaire and a romantic proposal. However, this quiz being what it's shaping up to be, we have to remind ourselves that diamonds have a long history of cruelty: miners enslaved, countries conquered, misery ensuing. Which of these international organizations produced a video in support of the Clean Diamond Trade Act? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Now that our romance has progressed to the point of engagement, it's time to get married. The most-watched wedding of the past century was that of Britain's Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer (and we all know how that turned out, don't we?) What kind of wedding cake was served at the (temporarily) happy couple's wedding breakfast? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Wedding cake eaten, romance takes a holiday...the honeymoon, of course! Perhaps a trip to romantic Niagara Falls? What famous writer said "Every American bride is brought here and must content herself with the sight of vast amounts of uninspired water. The sight of this waterfall must be one of the earliest, if not the keenest disappointments of American married life."? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. More internationally-minded newlyweds might consider a traditional Asian honeymoon destination--the exotically beautiful Vale of Kashmir, with its lakes, houseboats, and Shalimar Gardens. Better bring combat boots though, because this area has been violently contested for years. What two countries claim this once-peaceful paradise? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Many people think the Taj Mahal is the ultimate symbol of a man's love for a woman. Shah Jahan built it for his beloved, Mumtaz Mahal, in the 17th century. Why was this lovely place built? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Wherever your final honeymoon destination, chances are you may end up in a hot tub. Uh oh! Ever heard of "hot tub lung"? It's a decidedly unromantic condition you may get after prolonged exposure to an organism found in the air, especially in indoor hot tubs. Which of the following is the culprit? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. What's more romantic than some lovely lingerie? Spent any time reading one of those upscale underpinning catalogs lately? The average American woman is a size 14. What size is famous model Tyra Banks? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. On to more romantic reading. Arthur, Lancelot, and Guinevere's love story has filled countless pages and at least one more trivia question. At the end of Malory's "La Morte D'Arthur", what is Guinevere's fate? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our budding (literally!) romance begins with the traditional dozen roses, so beautiful and perfect. However, watch out for more than thorns, because the common rose insecticide Carbaryl has been shown to be both toxic and teratogenic in animal studies. What does "teratogenic" mean?

Answer: Causes malformed fetuses

Teratogenic means causing malformation of an embryo or fetus. Yikes! Of course, the pesticide might not be on the roses in question, but maybe we should all wash our hands anyway.

Answer: An air raid siren (130 decibels)

Surprised? I was too, since the threshold of pain to the human ear is 120 decibels! Oh, and don't skip the romantic public fireworks for some hand-held ones of your own, as those can produce sounds of up to 190 decibels...the same as a rocket launch or a gunshot at close range. Romantic!

Answer: Amnesty International

The video can be viewed at www.amnestyusa.org/diamonds. The Clean Diamond Trade Act was signed by the US president in April 2003. DeBeers is a leading diamond mining company which has declared its support to the campaign to end conflict diamonds. The ANC was instrumental in ending apartheid in South Africa. Oxfam America supported the act but did not produce the video.

Answer: Fruitcake with marzipan coating

This was an amazingly difficult question to research. The Royal Family favors fruitcake for many of its occasions, a strange taste by US standards.

Answer: Oscar Wilde

The famously cranky Wilde said those words in 1883 during a tour of the USA with actress Lillie Langtry. Wilde's own marriage ended that same year.

Answer: India and Pakistan

The predominantly Muslim state of Jammu and Kashmir is currently part of largely Hindu India. At the time of Indian independence from Britain in 1947, the Hindu ruler of Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh, decided to become part of India. Pakistan claims the area, and there are also numerous Kashmiri factions demanding an independent state. Religious and political strife is not romantic!
7. Many people think the Taj Mahal is the ultimate symbol of a man's love for a woman. Shah Jahan built it for his beloved, Mumtaz Mahal, in the 17th century. Why was this lovely place built?

Answer: Mumtaz Mahal had died and needed a tomb.

Regrettably, the queen never saw what is considered by many to be the most beautiful building on earth. She died (in childbirth with her 14th child, a healthy girl) in 1631. The Taj was begun as her tomb in 1632 and took around 20 years to build.

Answer: Mycobacterium avium

M. avium is a type of the same organism that causes tuberculosis, but this variant isn't contagious. Although uncommon, it is acquired by breathing the organism, which lives in poorly cleaned hot tubs in unventilated areas. It causes a cough and other symptoms such as fatigue, fever and chest tightness. T. pallidum is the organism that causes syphilis, C. perfringens causes gas gangrene, and Y. pestis causes the bubonic plague. Hmmm, maybe the hot tub isn't so bad after all?
9. What's more romantic than some lovely lingerie? Spent any time reading one of those upscale underpinning catalogs lately? The average American woman is a size 14. What size is famous model Tyra Banks?

Answer: 8

Tyra is also 5'11", somewhat above average. Despite her beauty, she's still larger than is suggested for high-fashion and runway models, where 6 is the preferred size, leading perhaps to the conclusion that fashion magazines are even less romantic than lingerie catalogs.
10. On to more romantic reading. Arthur, Lancelot, and Guinevere's love story has filled countless pages and at least one more trivia question. At the end of Malory's "La Morte D'Arthur", what is Guinevere's fate?

Answer: She has gotten herself to a nunnery.

Not only is Guinevere a nun at the end of Malory's masterwork, but Lancelot is a monk. They still love each other, but in a chaste and saintly way. Undoubtedly romantic, but a happy ending? You decide.
Thank you for taking my quiz, and may all your romantic moments actually BE romantic.
