Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Eminem is a fairly common name within modern music. What was his first LP to go platinum?

Answer: The Slim Shady LP

The Slim Shady LP ended up going quadruple-platinum in the US! Amazing, seeing as his previous and first album, 'Infinite', only sold about 1000 copies. He earned a Grammy Award with this LP as well as Grammies for The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show.
2. During the first few hundred years A.D, the Romans conquered and controlled Britain. Which tribal queen led an uprising against their oppressors?

Answer: Boudicca

Boudicca led her revolt in either AD 60 or 61, as different historians argue to an exact year. Matilda was the first female ruler of the English, even though her period of ruling was fairly indecisive, as she only ruled a couple of months in 1141, although she is often excluded as she was never crowned. Lady Jane Grey was the unofficial Queen of England for nine days before her beheading for treason. Elizabeth II of Windsor ascended the throne in 1952.
3. Which one of Adolf Hitler's staff was nicknamed 'The Shadow Man'?

Answer: Martin Bormann

Bormann was so named because of his attachment to Hitler in the role of personal assistant. Because of his direct influence he was widely regarded as 'The Shadow Man'. He was noted as being 'aggressive to those below him and servile to those above him'.

Although some speculation still existed of his whereabouts, some human remains found in 1972 showed that they belonged to Bormann based on dental records and substantiated bone fragments from a previous break. There was also evidence of glass in the jawbone, a common method used when taking a cyanide capsule in order to commit suicide.
4. Who was the first Roman Catholic President of the United States?

Answer: John F. Kennedy

John F Kennedy was also the second-youngest President, after Theodore Roosevelt. Events during his presidency included the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was assassinated in 1963, by Lee Harvey Oswald.
5. Who was the first Prime Minister of Britain?

Answer: Sir Robert Walpole

Walpole was the PM of Britain from 1721 until 1742, three years before his death. His official role was Chancellor of the Exchequer but he was given the role of Prime Minister de facto due to his influence with the Cabinet.
6. Who was the director of The Godfather?

Answer: Francis Ford Coppola

The Godfather is arguably regarded as the second greatest film in American cinema, behind Citizen Kane. It was, for a short period of time, the highest grossing film in the entire box office, and was the highest grossing film in 1972. It won 3 Oscars that year, for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor, for Marlon Brando.
7. There are many different theories about the meaning of J.R.R Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy. However, Tolkien himself has admitted the origin of LOTR. What was it?

Answer: Neither of these

Tolkien said that although the book was published in the 1950's, the One Ring was not an allegory for an Atomic Bomb. Others have prodded at Christianity as a theme for the books, and although Tolkien was a devout Christian, this is not the theme. Surprising to some, as they viewed Gandalf as an interpretation of Jesus, due to his resurrection and other factors. Tolkien insisted that the books were not a strict allegory of any kind, but open to reader interpretation.
8. "Friends" was a classic and very enjoyable TV series. What was the name of the elderly neighbour living underneath the group during the early seasons who always asked them to 'keep it down'?

Answer: Mr Heckles

He first appears in 'The One with the Blackout', and appears in several more episodes throughout the first season. His last appearance is in the appropriately named episode 'The One Where Mr. Heckles Dies'. He does, however, have a final cameo appearance in a flashback and he, without knowing, causes Joey to be Chandler's roommate instead of the photographer he had previously picked.
9. I am a very big fan of the 'Fallout' video game series. Which gaming company assumed the production of this game in 2004?

Answer: Bethesda Softworks

Bethesda acquired the 'Fallout' series in 2004 from Interplay Productions. They also make 'The Elder Scrolls' video game series, whose repertoire includes 'Skyrim' and 'Oblivion'. Treyarch and Infinity Ward both produce alternating 'Call of Duty' games, where Infinity Ward produces it one year and Treyarch the next, etc. Microsoft make many technology related products, namely the Windows OS and the Xbox 360 console.
10. Whose sword was named 'Excalibur'?

Answer: King Arthur

The legend of King Arthur of Camelot includes his role as a member of the Knights of the Round Table. Many mythical figures are related to King Arthur, including the wizard Merlin and his wife Guinevere.
Aragorn of course is a character from 'Lord of the Rings'.
