Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Also known as the Abominable Snowman, the Yeti is said to inhabit which mountain range?

Answer: The Himalayas

Although there is no concrete scientific evidence for the existence of the Abominable Snowman, it remains one of the great mysteries of the world. As such, it has appeared in many works of fiction, including novels, films and video games.
2. "The Snowman" is an iconic animated film from the 1980s, where a boy goes on a journey with a snowman that he built. In which country did this film originate?

Answer: England

Based on the 1978 book by Raymond Briggs, "The Snowman" was turned into an animated film in 1982. In the story, a boy builds a snowman that comes to life at midnight, and takes the boy flying on a journey to the North Pole, where he receives a scarf from Father Christmas. The film has been shown on English television station Channel 4 every year since 1982.
3. In golf, the term 'snowman' refers to eight strokes on a single hole.

Answer: True

Usually, golfing terms are related to birds (birdie, eagle... I'm sure you're familiar with them). However, our wintry pal refers to a score of eight on a hole. Not surprisingly, this is due to the '8' resembling the body of a snowman - two balls of snow on top of each other.
4. The Snowman was a villain in which American cartoon series?

Answer: Courage the Cowardly Dog

The Snowman first appeared in the episode "The Snowman Cometh" in series one of "Courage the Cowardly Dog". As a victim of global warming, The Snowman seeks to stop his melting and preserve himself by removing the anti-melting gene from humans.
5. What is the name of the snowman in the song by Gene Autry and the Cass County Boys?

Answer: Frosty

"Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul,
With a corncob pipe and a button nose
And two eyes made out of coal."

These immortal first lines of "Frosty the Snowman" have been sung by people all around the world since it was first recorded in 1950. Gene Autry and the Cass County Band also recorded "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" the year before. Both songs were written by Walter Rollins and Steve Nelson.
6. In which DC comic series is The Snowman a villain?

Answer: Batman

The Snowman first appeared in 1981, in issue 337 of the "Batman" comics. He is not a snowman in the traditional sense - he is a literal snow man. He possesses super-strength, and can control snow and ice and use them against his nemeses.
7. "The Snow Man" was a poem by which American Modernist poet?

Answer: Wallace Stevens

"The Snow Man" was featured in Wallace Steven's first anthology of poems in 1923, entitled "Harmonium". Consisting of one long sentence divided into five stanzas, the poem is one of Stevens' most popular, and was regarded by Samuel Jay Keyser, an American theoretical linguist, as "the best short poem in the English language bar none".
8. Snowman were a band hailing from which country?

Answer: Australia

Snowman were a four-piece indie rock band hailing from Perth in Western Australia. Formed in 2002, the band released an EP and two studio albums in Australia, before relocating to the UK in 2008. They released their third album in 2011, before disbanding shortly afterwards. Snowman's music was appreciated throughout Australia's music circles, with tracks played frequently on Triple J, a youth-oriented radio station.
9. Which famous writer was responsible for a fairy tale entitled "The Snowman" in 1861?

Answer: Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snowman" tells the story of a snowman who longs to be with a stove, despite warnings from his only friend, a dog, that it will melt him. Inevitably, the snowman melts due to the warm weather, and it is revealed that a poker was used to create him, and thus explains his attraction to the stove.
10. Traditionally, snowmen are given what vegetable as a nose?

Answer: Carrot

The snowman is usually built with three big balls of snow, making the head, torso and lower body, though in some countries, such as Japan, only two balls are used. Eyes of coal, a carrot nose, and a line of small rocks in the shape of a mouth traditionally make up the head of a snowman, and larger rocks on the body represent buttons, with sticks sometimes used as arms.
