Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Suggestion 1: Please say the name of the console that is experiencing issues. Which of these consoles was released first?

Answer: Xbox 360

The seventh generation of gaming consoles are led predominantly by Microsoft's Xbox 360, Nintendo's Wii, and Sony's PlayStation 3. The Zeebo is a console designed for emerging markets in video gaming, such as Brazil and Russia. The Xbox 360 was released first, in November 2005 in North America, almost a year before its rivals, the PlayStation 3 and the Wii, both of which were released in November 2006.
2. Suggestion 2: Locate the power button or switch on your console, and make sure it is turned on. Does the slim version of the PlayStation 3 have a main power switch?

Answer: No

The PlayStation 2 featured a main power switch at the back of the console, but was removed when the slim version was released. The PlayStation 3 followed similarly, with the original version having a main power switch, but the slim version lacking one. Instead of shutting down completely, the console remains in standby mode.
3. Suggestion 3: Please check the connections from your console to your television. Traditionally, RCA connector cables have three plugs on them. Stereo audio is represented by white and red jacks. What colour is associated with composite video?

Answer: Yellow

In order for you to see and hear the game, you can connect it to your television screen or monitor via RCA connector cables. The yellow jack signifies the video output, while the red and white represent the stereo audio channels. If the jacks are not connected properly, this may disrupt the game, through a flickering screen if the yellow jack is not inserted correctly, or crackling sound for the red and white jacks.
4. Suggestion 4: Make sure that the game disc is inserted in the console correctly. The Wii and the PlayStation 3 do not have disc trays; instead, a slot-loading disc drive allows the discs to be inserted into the console. Does the original Xbox 360 have a disc tray?

Answer: Yes

Following in the footsteps of the PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox, the Xbox 360 features a disc tray for loading discs. The rival consoles, however, do not. They make use of a slot-loading tray, allowing for faster insertion and removal of media.
5. Suggestion 5: Check the disc can be played in your region. Which of these countries would not be able to play a PAL game?

Answer: United States of America

PAL stands for Phase Alternate Line, and is a type of analogue television encoding system. The specifics of the PAL system may be confusing to some (myself included), but the basis of it, particularly when video games are concerned, are rather simple. Only games encoded with the PAL system can be played in PAL regions, likewise with NTSC and sometimes SECAM. Major PAL regions include Australia, UK, and China. NTSC is used in Japan, North America, and parts of South America (particularly on the western side).
6. Suggestion 6: Please check that the controller is connected to the console. What type of ports are on the PlayStation 3 to allow controllers to be charged?

Answer: USB 2.0

USB ports on the PlayStation 3 console allow for a variety of peripherals, including charging SIXAXIS and DualShock 3 controllers. A USB mini-B port on the top of the controller enables a cable to be connected for charging, or playing while charging. Other peripherals, such as the PlayStation Eye, wireless headsets, and keyboards can use the USB ports on the console.
7. Suggestion 7: Your game may be unable to save data. Be sure to check if you have sufficient memory space available. What is the standard size (in megabytes) of PlayStation 2 memory cards?

Answer: 8 MB

The 8MB memory card is the standard size for the PlayStation 2 console. Sony produces these memory cards with a MagicGate encryption, to prevent third parties from producing memory cards without a license. Larger sized memory cards have been created, but by non-Sony companies, which means that they are unsupported by Sony and are not guaranteed to be compatible with the console.

The Memory Card was abandoned with the introduction of the PlayStation 3, in favour of a built-in hard drive.
8. Suggestion 8: If there is no sound, go into the game options and check the volume is turned up. Which of these options would you not typically find in the Audio options for a game?

Answer: Mute game

Practically every game will have some sort of an audio settings screen, allowing you to adjust the audio to your liking. Typically, there will be separate settings for music and sound effects. Also, the sound type (Mono, Stereo, and sometimes Surround) can be chosen here.
9. Suggestion 9: If your controller has problems rumbling, check the in-game settings have allowed vibration. Rumbling or vibration was a popular feature of controllers of yesteryear. For what system was the Rumble Pak originally designed?

Answer: Nintendo 64

Just as wireless controllers are the main feature of seventh-generation consoles, vibration, or 'rumbling', was the hype during the sixth generation. The Rumble Pak was a device that could be attached to the Nintendo 64 controller to immerse the player in the game even more by providing force feedback when appropriate. Sony's DualShock controller for the PlayStation featured built-in rumble technology, which continued with the DualShock 2. With the release of the PlayStation 3, the new SIXAXIS controller lacked the vibration, with Sony stating that it was a last generation feature.

Despite this, Sony released the DualShock 3, which replaced the SIXAXIS, which featured vibration.
10. Suggestion 10: If your console or peripherals still do not perform their intended tasks, please return it to the manufacturer for repair or replacement. In semi-rare cases, the Xbox 360 will malfunction and produce an error known as the what Ring of Death?

Answer: Red

If three flashing red lights appear around the power button on your Xbox 360, it means an error has occurred inside the console, and repair by the manufacturer is necessary to get it working again. The Red Ring of Death has been the bane of many gamers over the years, and Microsoft have had their fair share of complaints from people with defective consoles.

The new slim version of the Xbox 360, released in 2010, now alerts the player to errors via the centre of the power button changing colour from green to red.
