quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many artists have recorded "Red, Red Wine", but who originally wrote and recorded the song in 1968?

Answer: Neil Diamond

Neil Diamond composed and released "Red, Red Wine" in 1968. It reached number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 in that same year. UB40's softer reggae version of the song went all the way and reached number one on the UK charts in 1983.

Everyone knows that red wine contains antioxidants that are beneficial to your health, but one study has shown that it may also stave off the development of Alzheimer's disease. Since I'm not a great fan of red wine, I'll stick with Sudoku and Trivia.
2. "O my Luve's like a red, red rose, That's newly sprung in June." Who gave us this memorable quote?

Answer: Robert Burns

Robert Burns wrote "A Red, Red Rose" as a song in 1794, and gave it to Scots singer Pietro Urbani, who then added it to his book "Scots Songs". While Burns originally wrote it as a song, "Red, Red Rose" is often written as a poem. Either way, the phrase is memorable.
3. In the Christmas ditty for children, Santa is wearing a red, red coat. What other scarlet apparel is Santa wearing?

Answer: Hat

There are many titles for this little ditty, but they are all similar to "He Wears A Red, Red Coat". While it's a popular addition to children's Christmas song collections, I was unable to find anything about its origins or creator.
4. In which 1918 movie does Monroe Salisbury first rescue, then kidnap and later fall in love with, the boss' daughter?

Answer: The Red, Red Heart

Directed by Wilfred Lucas, this movie may have been a winner at the time, but its plot is very outdated (and rather cringe-making) now. Ruth Clifford was a teenager when making this film and said that making screen romance with a middled aged, toupee-wearing Indian felt rather uncomfortable. Maybe so, but it didn't stop them making several other westerns together.
5. "Red-Red" is a mashed bean stew made with black-eyed peas and spices. Which country is home to this gastronomic creation?

Answer: Ghana

Red-Red is a very popular stew in Ghana. It is made of mashed cowpeas (black-eyed peas), onions and tomatoes. As a variation, some people add a small amount of fish to their concoction. The stew gets its red colour (and its name) from red palm oil, tomatoes and spices. The dish is usually served with fried plantains.
6. Which American artist released the song "Red Red Red" in 2005?

Answer: Fiona Apple

"Red Red Red" is from Fiona's third album "Extraordinary Machine" released in 2005. The album was leaked before release, allowing fans to download it free off the Internet. Despite this, or possibly even because of this, the album became more successful than her previous works, and scored her an (unsuccessful) Grammy nomination.
7. Rob Zombie released "Never Gonna Stop (The Red, Red Kroovy)" in 2001. But what does kroovy mean?

Answer: Blood

"Krov" is Russian for blood. The phrase "red, red kroovy" was first coined in Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange" in 1962.
The song scored Zombie a Grammy nomination, and has featured on the soundtracks for "Rollerball" (2002) and "Walking Tall" (2004). Video game lovers should be familiar with it as it features on Atari's "Test Drive: Eve of Destruction".
8. In his time, playwright Charles Way has produced some well-loved and memorable stage presentations. One 2001 show did not, unfortunately, become such a big hit. Can you finish the title of Way's lesser-known production: "Red, Red _________"?

Answer: Shoes

"Red, Red Shoes" opened in the Robin Howard Theatre in 2001. He also published the play in his book: "Plays For Young People' (2001). Way has produced over 40 plays, some of which have been performed globally. A few of his better-known productions include: "Alice- An Adventure in Wonderland", "The Borrowers" and "Beauty and the Beast".
9. Alternative rock band, "Red, Red Meat", scored their biggest break in 1992 when they toured with which critically-acclaimed band of the '90s?

Answer: The Smashing Pumpkins

After releasing five albums between 1992 and 1999, Chicago band "Red, Red Meat" separated. They never officially broke up though, and have had many reunions over the years. They released another album, "Bunny Gets Paid", in 2009.
10. What, according to Dean Martin, comes "bob, bob, bobbin' along"?

Answer: Red, red robin

"The Red Robin Song" was written in 1926 by Tin Pan Alley songwriter Henry MacGregor "Harry" Woods. Al Jolson had first success with the song, taking it to number one on the Billboard charts. Later, many artists, including Doris Day and Dean Martin, recorded it.
