Answer: Balloon bombs

Fire balloons also called balloon bombs were large hydrogen filled balloons with bombs attached. They were launched into the jet stream over the Pacific in attempts to bomb the U.S. and Canada. While overall, they were an ineffective weapon, one of them did land in Oregon in May of 1945 causing the death of a pregnant woman and five children.

This was one of the very few direct attacks on North America during WWII. While over 9,000 of these weapons were launched, most landed in the ocean, in uninhabited areas, or were shot down by Allied aircraft.

The coelacanth was rediscovered by the western world after it was caught in the Indian Ocean and brought to the attention of the owner of a small museum. Other coelacanths have been found, most of them near the Comoros Islands. It is an example of a "Lazarus species", a term for any animal thought to be extinct and then found to still be alive.
