Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I'm generally a humble table, and I sit in many houses where all of the food is prepared. After the food is ready, the humans add salt and pepper to my surface and sit down to eat. Do you know which table I am?

Answer: kitchen table

The humble kitchen table is one of the most used furniture pieces in many households. These are often made of wood, and may have wood, Formica, glass, or many other materials used as the table top.
2. I was created as the foundation of Roman law and was displayed in the Roman Forum so that all men would know and understand the law. I have since been known as "The Law of the _____ Tables", but do you know how many tables?

Answer: Twelve

The plebeians and patricians of Rome had many disagreements. The first ten tables were created by the patricians in 451 BC. In 449 BC an additional two tables were added. The twelve tables were: Debtors Laws, Inheritance Laws, Marriage, Laws, Rights of a Father, Property Laws, Will and Testament, and Laws relating to Women.
3. In most office environments, I have a place of honor. I usually sit in a room by myself until the humans come to sit and talk. Many times they bring writing paper to keep notes. Can you identify me from the list below?

Answer: conference table

Many office environments include a conference table where meetings can be held (hopefully productively!) and decisions made. The conference table is often in a room set aside just for such meetings.
4. Many students first see me in a chemistry class. I was developed by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869 to group elements. Do you know which table I am?

Answer: periodic table

Mendeleev, a Russian chemist, is generally given the credit for creating the now commonly used Periodic Table. His effort was unique because he was able to group the elements by atomic mass correctly, and he correctly predicted elements that had not yet been discovered.
5. I'm often found outside in a picturesque spot. Humans generally bring food and drink, and sit on my benches to enjoy their meal (often unintentionally inviting the ants as well). Which table am I?

Answer: picnic table

Picnic tables are often found outside in public areas such as campgrounds, playgrounds, public parks, and other scenic spots. These tables are an invitation to have a seat for a short rest, a meal, or to just enjoy the view.
6. In Arthurian legends I am found. I was built so that all of the Knights were equal when seated. Of those listed, which table am I?

Answer: round table

The Arthurian legends include not only the round table, but mystery, magic and many imperfect humans. Though debates continue about the origin of the legends, most sources agree that "Roman de Brut", created by Robert Wace, was the first to include the round table and to name Arthur's sword "Excalibur".
7. I come in many shapes and sizes, and can be found in a home or a hall. Humans put balls of various sizes on my surface and move them around with a cue stick. What type of table am I?

Answer: billiard table

There are several billiard tables built for specific cue sports such as a snooker table, carom table, or pool table, though all tables generally have a bed made of slate and are covered with felt. The specialized carom table has no pockets. Snooker and pool tables are pocket tables, and most of the games played involve pocketing the object ball.
8. I have been created to store information in rows and columns. My cells can be easily sorted or indexed, do you know which table I am?

Answer: database table

Database tables allow for the storage of data so that it can be retrieved as necessary. Many of the database applications have defined data types which further determine the type of data stored, such as several types for both text and numerical data.
9. I'm a table often found in homes where television is the entertainment of choice. If I share that I can fold up and be hidden discreetly, can you identify which table I am?

Answer: tray table

Tray tables, or TV-Tray tables came into vogue during the 1950s when television was new. They were marketed as portable tables which could be set up for eating so that not a minute of that captivating television phenomenon would be missed!
10. I've been in doctors' surgeries for centuries, and have been significantly improved over time. It's also important that I stay sterile. Which of these tables might I be?

Answer: operating table

Operating room tables can be either stationary or mobile, and generally can be set in any of several positions depending on the surgery required and the patient's condition. Many of the stationary tables also have interchangeable tops for several different surgical specialties.
