10. Which one of these descriptions can't be matched to the name "Wales"?

Answer: The old name for Cornwall

Cornwall was known for a while as "West Wales". "wealas" was the Anglo Saxon word for "foreigners" - and anyone from not within their own square mile became known as such. Cornwall was "West Wales" because it was west of Wessex, the Anglo Saxon stronghold in the 6th and 7th centuries. At the same, Cumbria, north of Wessex, became known as "North Wales". As for the little country at the west of the British Isles - they were just straightforward, unclassified geographically, "foreigners". Plus ca change- but we like it that way down here in Cymru! Incidentally, there are 10 places called "Wales" in the USA, mainly down the East Coast - where we "foreigners" landed when we ran away from the hordes of Wessex!

This also probably goes some way to explaining why there is a village in Yorkshire (in the north of England) known as "Wales". "Wales" are big, thick bits of wood used to clad the outside of ships - and Jimmy "Jimbo" Wales from Alabama is one of the co-founders of Wikipedia - an invaluable source for dredging up some of these obscure quiz questions!
