Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. True or false: Most of the gold in the US is stored at Fort Knox in Kentucky.

Answer: False

Most of the nation's gold- about $150 billion worth- is actually stored at the Federal Reserve Bank in New York City. However, there is quite a bit of gold at Fort Knox, home of the U.S. Gold Bullion Depository, built in 1936.
2. What city has the most canals in the world?

Answer: Cape Coral, USA

Surprised? Cape Coral in Florida has more than 400 miles of canals.
3. Who *could be said to have been* the twelfth President of the United States?

Answer: David Rice Atchison

If you said Taylor, guess again. David Rice Atchison has the distinction of having served as President of the United States for the shortest term- one day. As it happened, the term of James Polk, the outgoing President, ended on a Sunday, March 4 (1849). Zachary Taylor refused to take the Oath on a Sunday for religious reasons, so the title fell to Atchison, president pro tem of the Senate. (The Vice-President had already resigned, also).

When asked how he spent his day as President, Atchison said, "I went to bed".

A real go-getter.
4. From what continent do camels originate?

Answer: North America

I had a hard time believing this one myself, so I looked it up on a website called "A-Z of the Arabian Camel". According to this website, "Scientists believe that ancestors of the modern camel lived in North America at least 40 million years ago, wandering across the Alaskan 'land bridge' to Asia and eventually Africa". Who'd have thunk it?
5. True or false: Tuberculosis is ONLY a disease of the lungs.

Answer: False

Although it usually settles in the lungs, tuberculosis can actually occur at any place in the body. It can also occur in the lymphatic system, the second most common site. The least common site is the peritoneum, the lining of the abdominal organs.
6. True or false: all bacteria are too small to be seen by the naked eye.

Answer: False

There's one known such bugger that can be seen without a microscope: epulopiscium, which is a million times larger than most bacteria, at a whopping one-fifth of an inch wide. It was discovered in 1985 in the intestines of a sturgeon.
7. What's the only planet on which the sun rises in the west and sets in the east?

Answer: Venus

This is because, for some unknown reason, Venus is the only planet that orbits counterclockwise and spins clockwise.
8. True or false: Rain clouds are darker than ordinary clouds.

Answer: False

They just appear darker because of this phenomenon: tiny drops of moisture reflect light. Big drops absorb light. Clouds that are going to produce rain have larger drops; therefore, they absorb more light and appear darker.
9. What is the best source of protein for the human body?

Answer: Termites

Yuck! Studies have shown that termites have more protein ounce per ounce than any meat; apparently they have the amino acids necessary to produce protein more completely than animals. Still, I think I'll pass...
10. True or false: According to law, an American Supreme Court justice must be a lawyer.

Answer: False

Believe it or not, that small detail is not mentioned in the law...
