Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Religion: Who was NOT one of the Magi?

Answer: Japheth

According to tradition, The Magi, or Three Wise Men, were Balthazar, Caspar and Melchior. The Magi were foreigners who came to visit the baby Jesus after his birth in Bethlehem. They brought with them the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. BTW, myrrh is a resin used in perfume, incense and medicine.
2. Television: Which is NOT a location for the TV show "NCIS"?

Answer: Miami, FL

NCIS is an acronym which stands for Naval Criminal Investigative Service. First introduced on the show "JAG" (another acronym), the original "NCIS" was set in Washington, D.C., and has become one of the longest running scripted prime time TV shows. It's success led to "NCIS" stories set in New Orleans, Louisiana and Los Angeles, California.
3. Science: What is NOT a bone in the inner ear?

Answer: hyoid

The bones in the middle ear, i.e., the ossicles, include the malleus, incus and stapes. The stapes, a stirrup-shaped bone, is the smallest bone in the human body. These bones are also know as the hammer, anvil and stirrup, and their function is to transmit sounds from the air into the cochlea. The one that doesn't belong, the hyoid, is a bone in the neck.
4. Music: Who is NOT one of the singing Hanson brothers?

Answer: Nick

The Hanson brothers are Zak (drums), Isaac (guitar and piano) and Taylor (keyboards). They are from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The band changed their name from the Hanson Brothers to Hanson in 1993. They recorded their first independent album, "Boomerang" in 1995. The following year they released "MMMBop", with the earworm song "MMMBop" rocketing the trio to fame.
5. People: Who was NOT a Bronte sister?

Answer: Jane

The three Bronte sisters, Charlotte (1816-1855), Emily (1818-1838) and Anne (1820-1849), were born in the village of Thornton in England. Apparently there wasn't much to do there so they entertained themselves by writing. Their novels and poems were published under the male pen names of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell.
6. Humanities: Who was NOT one of the three fates?

Answer: Antigone

In Greek mythology there are three fates or Moirai who are responsible for assigning destinies to mortals at the time of their birth. These goddesses weave their tapestry on a loom which dictates the fate of humans. They are called Clotho, the Spinner, Lachesis, the Alloter, and Atropos, the Inflexible. The other choice, Antigone, is the daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta.
7. Literature: Which published work was NOT written by Shel Silverstein?

Answer: A Wrinkle in Time

"Shel" Silverstein (1930-1999) was an American writer and illustrator known for his wonderful children's stories. "The Giving Tree", published in 1964, is an example of selfless love. "The Missing Piece", from 1976, teaches about change and letting go. "Where the Sidewalk Ends" is a beautiful 1974 poem about the beauty just beyond the concrete. "A Wrinkle in Time" is one of my favorite books for kids; it was written by Madeleine L'Engle and published in 1962.
8. Movies: Which was NOT a James Bond movie?

Answer: In Like Flint

You can find "Bond. James Bond" in 1963's "From Russia with Love", the second Bond movie with Sean Connery where he battles SPECTRE. In 1973 we have Roger Moore as Bond in "Live and Let Die", this time fighting Mr. Big and drugs. Finally, in 2002, we meet up with Pierce Brosnan as Bond, now incarcerated in a North Korean prison. "In Like Flint" was a 1967 spy film with James Coburn as Derek Flint.
9. Sports: Which Chicago Cub is the double play odd one out?

Answer: Jimmy Archer

Possibly one of the best known double play combinations of all time was Tinkers to Evers to Chance. Shortstop Joe Tinker, second baseman Johnny Evers and first baseman Frank Chance played for the Chicago Cubs from 1902 through 1912. The trio helped the Cubs win two World Series.

They were immortalized in a 1910 eight-line poem by Franklin Pierce Adams called "Baseball's Sad Lexicon". FYI, Jimmy Archer was also on the Cubs from 1909 to 1917.
10. History: Which was NOT one of the Axis powers in World War II?

Answer: Soviet Union

During World War II, the Axis powers included Germany, Italy and Japan. They were sometimes referred to as the Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis, occasionally using the acronym "Roberto". Opposing them were the Allies which included Great Britain (Winston Churchill), the United States (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) and the Soviet Union (Joseph Stalin).

In 1940, the Soviet Union did have discussions with Germany about becoming the fourth Axis power, but it never came to fruition. China allied itself with the Allied Powers.
