Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is an evergreen shrub whose leaves produce an oil that is used for flavoring gum, mints and candy?

Answer: Wintergreen

Wintergreen is also the obsolete term for what we now call evergreen. It was used to describe plants and trees that remained green throughout the winter.
2. Who is the person who always gets the blame, even when it's not his fault? It also was the name of a TV show in the 1980s.

Answer: The fall guy

Interestingly, in The Fall Guy, the TV show that ran from 1981 to 1986, Colt Seavers, who was played by Lee Majors, really was the fall guy. He played a combination stunt man and bounty hunter, and the theme song of the show referred to the fact that as a stunt man he never got the credit that the movie and TV stars got, even though he took all the risks.
3. Drugs, sex and rock and roll. Hippies, flower power, LSD, Haight-Ashbury and "Are You Going to San Francisco". All of these define the next answer. What happened in 1967 to earn the title?

Answer: The Summer of Love

The Summer of Love in San Francisco actually began in January 1967, when the national media began focusing on the crazy, drugged-out kids that lived there and called themselves hippies. By the time summer came around, young people from all over the country descended on San Francisco, in particular a small section called Haight-Ashbury. Protesting the Vietnam War, and widening what was called the generation gap, the era of "Drugs, Sex and Roll and Roll" was born.

The heroes of the day became Dr. Timothy Leary, he of the "turn on, tune in, and drop out" fame, Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, and Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane.
4. This African antelope was once the national symbol of South Africa. What is its name?

Answer: Springbok

Male springboks actually pronk, which is Afrikaans for boast, when trying to attract a mate. They have a flap along their back which lifts into a fan shape when pronking, which they use to show off their strength to potential mates. They have a jumping gait as they run, reaching speeds of up to 55 mph. Springbok comes from the Afrikaans words for jump and antelope.
5. Which is the longest night of the year?

Answer: Winter Solstice

In the Northern Hemisphere, the winter solstice occurs on either December 21st or 22nd. In the Southern Hemisphere it is on June 20th or 21st. It is the shortest day of the year and the longest night. For several days before and after the solstice, the sun appears to be at its lowest point in the sky giving it its name from the Latin sol, "sun" and stitium, "stoppage".
6. Who was reputed to be General Dwight D. Eisenhower's mistress?

Answer: Kay Summersby

It is alleged that Ike and Kay, his British chauffeur and later secretary, had an affair while he was a General during WWII. However, due to his direct efforts she went from being a British private at the beginning of the war to a US citizen with a rank of captain at the end.

It's also true that Summersby wrote an autobiography after his death titled "Past Forgetting: My Love Affair with Dwight D. Eisenhower". We also know that Mamie, his wife disliked Kay intensely.
7. Niagara or Victoria. What are these natural wonders?

Answer: Waterfalls

Most of the tallest waterfalls are in Africa and South America, but there are thousands of falls all over the world. Victoria Falls is located on the Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia while Niagara Falls can be found between Ontario (Canada) and New York (USA).
8. What is the worldwide sports competition held every four years, featuring skiing, ice skating, bobsledding, luge and other sports played on the ice or snow?

Answer: Winter Olympics

At the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, the Caribbean nation of Jamaica announced that it was sending a bobsled team to complete for the first time. Although the team finished in last place, they won the heart of the world and became the crowd favorites because of their determination.

In 1993, Disney Productions made a movie about the team, called "Cool Runnings". The next year, at the Lillehammer games, the Jamaican four-man sled came in ahead of the team from the United States.
9. What was the name of the play within the play "The Producers" and also the opening song of the show?

Answer: Springtime for Hitler

Done both as a movie and as a play, "The Producers" was about two con men who decide to produce the world's worst show so it would close on opening night and they wouldn't have to pay back the investors. The show they chose was "Springtime for Hitler". Of course, the audience loved it, the show became a success, the con men became rich Broadway producers, and they lived happily ever after. Sounds like a fairy tale to me.
10. Now let's put all the seasons together. Who was the female Native American inhabitant of Doodyville, along with Buffalo Bob, Howdy, Phineas T. Bluster and Clarabelle?

Answer: Princess Summerfall Winterspring

The Howdy Doody Show was one of the first and one of the most popular children's television show in the 1950s. It incorporated both live actors and marionettes living and interacting together in Doodyville. It was the first show to air five days a week, and one of the first shows to broadcast in color when the technology became available in 1955. Princess Summerfall Winterspring was one of the few female characters on the show. Clarabell the Clown never uttered a word throughout its 2,343 program run until the very last show, when Bob Keeshan, who played him and later became Captain Kangaroo, surprised everyone by saying, "Good-Bye, kids".
