Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is Arthur, the animal geek. He loves all sorts of creatures far and wide, and his favourite animal happens to be a mammal under the order of Tubulidentata. This animal is an insectivore and lives in Africa. I sat there puzzled, but then he revealed this animal is in fact know as what?

Answer: Aardvark

The aardvark is a creature to behold. The only mammal under the order of Tubulidentata, its name means 'Earth pig' in Afrikaans. Daniel picks up one of his specimens for a closer look. Its long snout contains a combination of molars and peg-like teeth, which a perfect for picking up and crunching on termites and ants. It also has an extremely keen sense of smell, with ten nasal turbinates in that snout. For comparison, we humans only have four.

The feet of this animal are also intriguing. Daniel shows off the fact that the front feet have four toes, whilst the back feet have five. The front feet are adapted to dig burrows with their shovel type design.

That's our first geek, and it's time for me to meet the next.
2. This is Ned, the TV geek. He spends many hours in front of his HD flat screen watching his favourite Blu-Ray collection, and as we look through the shelves, we see 'Wonderfalls', 'Pushing Daisies' and in a locked box, his prized collection of all three seasons of 'Hannibal'. He proudly states his near worship of this man's TV work, so he wants to ask you, who is the writer and producer responsible for all these shows?

Answer: Bryan Fuller

Our TV geek is a big Bryan Fuller fan. Fuller began his work writing for the 'Star Trek' franchise in the 90s, working on both 'Star Trek: Voyager' and 'Deep Space Nine'. His critical stride began in the early 2000s, with 2004's 'Wonderfalls', a series that follows a young lady's strange journey with talking inanimate objects in a gift shop, garnering a loyal fan base and high praise from critics, despite being short lived at only 13 episodes.

in 2007, 'Pushing Daisies' premiered, with a twisted tale of a pie maker who can bring the dead back to life with his touch. It also got the critics and fans singing for him and won seven Emmy awards in the process, but the series fell victim to the Writers' Strike of 2008 and lasted just two seasons.

Ned though, has a special place in his heart for Fuller's adaptation of 'Hannibal'. It premiered in 2013, and starred Mads Mikkelsen as the titular psychiatrist and gourmand for human flesh. 'Hannibal' is adapted from the earlier 'Red Dragon' novel, showcasing Dr. Lecter aiding - whilst manipulating - the FBI as he is assigned to help the ailing mental faculties of FBI profiler Will Graham, played by Hugh Dancy. The show is famed for its food preparation scenes, with an emphasis on the finer side of cuisine, whilst not being shy about showing Hannibal's favoured choice of meat, leg osso bucco anyone? The show was cancelled in 2015 after three seasons due to low ratings.

Let's go meet our next geek, I feel uncomfortable with this cannibal fascination right now.
3. This is Titania, the astronomy geek. She loves stars, and opening the door to her home shows a galaxy painted on the walls. She takes us to her personal favourite constellation, it contains the bright star Beta Arae, and the name means 'Altar' in Greek. What's the constellation Titania singled out?

Answer: Ara

Ara is a constellation depicted by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy, it is part of the Hercules family due to it being close in proximity. Its overall appearance is like an altar with a burning incense offering, which explains Titania's love for burning this stuff at night.

The brightest star highlighted on the wall is Beta Arae, which has an orange hue and is just over eight times larger and much brighter than our sun. This star is indeed a supergiant.

Hercules is based off the famed hero with many labours. Hercules is one of the largest constellations in the sky. Crux is the 'Southern Cross' found in the Southern Hemisphere. Vulpecula is the little fox constellation, which is located under Cygnus, the swan.

Now, on to our next geek!
4. This is Ryan, the video game geek, more specifically a 'BioShock' geek. He is enraptured by the series and has every bit of memorabilia neatly assembled in his study. One of his more prominent figures is a George Washington look-alike with flags on its back, gears, a very cracked face and a peppermill machine gun. What is the given name for this foe in 'BioShock Infinite'?

Answer: Motorized Patriot

The Motorized Patriot is a clockwork robot that's purposed to be a sort of tour guide in the 'Hall of Heroes' of Columbia, the floating city of the delusional religious zealot, Zachary Comstock. Built to take lots of punishment with no sense of self-preservation, this automaton will riddle you with bullets from its Peppermill machine gun whilst spewing out Columbian propaganda. The exposed gears on its back are a major weak point of the robot, and as it takes damage, its face falls off to show a wood and steel skull. Ryan's figure even has that detail, and it never fails to creep me out. Yeesh!

'BioShock Infinite' is the 2013 entry into the 'BioShock' series, set in the sky city Columbia. It follows Booker, a Pinkerton agent who seeks the mysterious, yet powerful, Elizabeth who lives in prison under her father Comstock. The game set a new bar in horror with its bright and open city, early 20th Century charm and chilling view of extreme Americana, racism and religious bigotry.

Let's go to see something a little more cheerful, shall we?
5. This is Paul Eric, the movie geek, more specifically any movie starring Meryl Streep. As you can tell, he's a big fan. The movie he picked out from his collection tells the story of two individuals, a food revolutionary who brought French cooking to the American home through 'The French Chef', and the other, a woman inspired to cook all the recipes of 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking' within a year. What is this film?

Answer: Julie & Julia

'Julie & Julia' is a 2009 film starring Amy Adams and of course, Meryl Streep. The film follows the lives of two ladies 50 years apart in time. Julie Powell, a struggling writer with her blog 'The Julie/Julia Project', where she cooks all 524 recipes from the cookbook within a year. As for Julia Child, she goes to Paris in the 1950s to master French cooking at Le Cordon Bleu, and through her charm, brought French cuisine to the masses through her classic cookbook 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking' and her show 'The French Chef'.

Their lives are shown in parallel, intertwining their struggles in the search for meaning in their lives through food. Meryl's performance of Child earned her numerous awards and praise from critics for her spot on rendition of the chef herself.

Time to geek out to our next one.
6. This is Hans, the hoax history geek. He is fascinated by the fakes and forgeries of man, and he has something from the days of World War II, or at least supposedly from that time. These journals created a big buzz around the world, but were in fact created by a man named Konrad Kujau in the 1980s. What are these forgeries?

Answer: The Hitler Diaries

The diaries were one of the great shams of Nazi memorabilia, created by Kujau and then purchased by journalist Gerd Heidemann as a major story for 'Stern', a news magazine. Eventually a press conference made the diaries public, and 'Stern' made major headlines with the so-called discovery. While the hoax caught on like wildfire, the forgeries were...somewhat poor. The diaries used post-war materials and chemicals, the handwriting was described as a 'terrible rendition' by analysts, and the presence of tea on the covers to make it aged was apparent when further studied.

Eventually, in 1984 both Kujau and Heidemann were charged with defrauding 'Stern' of 9.3 million DMs and for their work in the forgery, and were sentenced to fours years in jail. The proceedings were what interested Hans, particularly how everything was a farce, with a member of the jury being replaced when he fell asleep during trial, and the two poor souls having screaming matches during trial that were just...petty and embarrassing.

On to the next geek.
7. This is Kao, the geography geek, more specifically the geography of his homeland, Thailand. He hails from the Northeastern region in the city of Khorat. The big man had it tough there, but loves it with all his heart. What is the name of this geek's region?

Answer: Isan

Isan is located in the northeast region of Thailand; it borders Laos and the influence shows in their language and architecture. They speak a form of Lao, though they do converse in Thai if they wish. Isan's main form of economy is through agriculture, with their main crops being sticky rice, sugarcane and cassava. Isan's land is not suitable for jasmine rice due to the constant flooding and poor drainage of the fields in the Khorat Plateau, which is mostly sandy flatland with little vegetation between farms. Despite all that, there's one thing Kao loves as much as I do about Isan - their food, which is very rich, spicy and always accompanied by the aforementioned sticky rice.

Khao Luang is a mountain located in the Nakhon Si Thammarat Province in southern Thailand. Phuket is a popular island for tourists, whilst Bangkok is of course, the capital located in Central Thailand.

Let's meet our next geeky soul!
8. This is Richard, the music geek. He's into electronic music, and goes for this electronic pioneer whose most well-known works include the albums 'Play', '18' and the theme music for the 'Bourne' series of films, 'Extreme Ways'. Who is this fellow geek who tells us that 'we are all made of stars'?

Answer: Moby

Born Richard Melville Hall, he gained the nickname Moby as the author of 'Moby Dick', Herman Melville, is his great-great-great-grand uncle. He saw early underground success in the early 90s, but struggled till 1999, with the release of 'Play', which he intended to be his final album. Initial sales were poor, but as time went on with singles like 'Porcelain' and 'Natural Blues', the album stayed in the charts and eventually sold over 12 million copies worldwide.

Moby has also licensed his songs for use in film, and Richard runs to the computer to play 'Extreme Ways', which is the main tune for the 'Bourne' movies starring Matt Damon. This song was the second single from the album '18', which while still successful, failed to reach the heights of 'Play'. His record 'These Systems are Failing', was released in October 2016.

Let's meet another!
9. This is Stamford, the transport geek. He lives in Singapore, just like me, and is pretty knowledgeable about the train system here, the Mass Rapid Transit or MRT. We always play a game where we list landmarks around the area of a station and he makes a guess. So now, he'll play it on you. This station is near the Church of St. Alphonsus, a popular Catholic church with a massive congregation, and the name of the station plays on that. Where are we?

Answer: Novena

Novena MRT station is located near the Church of St. Alphonsus, or Novena Church as it is known. The church gained popularity in the region for their Saturday Novenas and weekday afternoon masses for the office workers of the area. In fact, the church attracts more parishioners on Saturdays than they do on Sunday mornings! This would christen the street area around the church 'Novena'.

The station first opened in 1987 as one of the first stations completed for what will become the North-South Line, represented on the map in red. The station's architecture was best known for its green tiles, that is until they were replaced with painted plastic due to aging and eventual falling.

The remaining stations are crossed out on Stamford's map. Raffles Place, smack dab in the financial district, is an interchange station that crosses the North-South Line and East-West Line (green). one-north is part of the Circle Line (yellow), and is named after a science and developmental real estate project in the area. Telok Ayer is at the Downtown Line (blue), and is near the Chinatown area.

And now for something completely different.
10. And finally there is the food geek. In fact, that geek is the one keeping this quiz up, me! I'm a major foodie, and nothing gets me going more than Japanese food! I love cold soba noodles, I can't get enough of it, its a refreshing slurp everytime! So now, you're at my mercy, so I'll ask you, if you are being served 'cha soba', what is it are you having?

Answer: Soba noodles flavoured with matcha green tea.

Soba noodles are made of buckwheat, and can be served either hot or cold; both styles involve a tsuru, a dashi (or broth) flavoured with sweet soy sauce and mirin. The hot style has a thinner broth and is served like a bowl of ramen with assorted ingredients. Cold soba is served on a bamboo mat with ice and a slightly thicker tsuru with chopped spring onion and daikon radish (you can add wasabi if you wish) where you dip the noodles in and then slurp them up. This is my favoured style, and goes well with tempura vegetables or sashimi.

I especially love cha soba, which is made with buckwheat flour and matcha green tea powder. It gives the noodles an extra depth of flavour and a bright green colour which I adore. After a meal of this, it's tradition to drink the water the noodles were cooked in with the tsuru.

So it's fitting that I invited my fellow geeks to this dinner party of soba noodles of all kinds! Cheers my friends, to the soba!
