Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Israeli prime minister who resigned in 1977 due to a financial scandal

Answer: Yitzhak Rabin

The scandal broke during his first term in office. A journalist found that Rabin held two foreign bank accounts (along with his wife) in breach of Israeli regulations at the time. Perhaps a bit strict. He was assassinated in 1995 during his second term as Israel's prime minister.
2. Peruvian president who had his resignation rejected in 2000

Answer: Alberto Fujimori

After going for a third term as president and barely winning the run-off vote, claims of voting irregularities and mass protests followed. It was however a corruption scandal that brought his bid to an end. His resignation fax from Japan was rejected. Instead Congress voted to remove him from office on the basis that he was 'permanently morally disabled'.

How often is a coup carried out by the country's president? Known as a self-coup, this was what Fujimori did during his first term of office. Peru was in political deadlock in 1992 and he was hamstrung. Following the coup, he shut down Congress, suspended the constitution and purged the judiciary.

In 2003 he was extradited from Chile and found guilty of various crimes against humanity stemming from the government's struggle against the Shining Path and MRTA insurgencies during the 1990s.
3. President who resigned for a day after losing the Six-Day War of 1967.

Answer: Gamal Abdel Nasser

Nasser was President of Egypt from 1956 until his death from a heart attack in 1970 (apart from one day). He became popular in the Arab world after nationalising the Suez Canal in 1956.
4. Prime Minister who successfully won the Six-Day War of 1973, and who resigned in 1974 after five years in office

Answer: Golda Meir

Golda Meir was Israel's first woman prime minister and was one of the signatories of the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948. She resigned in part due to the burden of the role.
5. Japanese prime minister who put his relationship with a mistress ahead of his elected role

Answer: Kakuei Tanaka

A popular magazine called 'Bungeishunjū' published a long article in 1974 implying a history of corruption on the part of Tanaka. A public enquiry was set up however Tanaka resigned in order to protect the first witness, a mystery woman called Aki Sato, before she was required to give evidence.

In 1976 Lockheed Corporation revealed it had paid $1.8 million in bribes through a trading company to Tanaka as prime minister. The subsequent court case resulted in a four-year jail sentence and a 500 million yen fine in 1983. Appeals and illness meant jail time was avoided. He died in 1993.
6. President whose 30-year tenure ended during the Arab Spring in 2011, with him then seeking to live out his days at his villa in Sharm El-Sheikh

Answer: Hosni Mubarak

Mubarak was Vice-President to Egypt's President Sadat and took over from him following Sadat's assassination in 1981. He was injured during the attack.

Following the Egyptian Revolution of 2011, Mubarak and his family were in effect under house arrest. He and his sons faced charges of pre-meditated killings, corruption and embezzlement.
7. Guatemalan president who helped displace two previous presidents but succumbed himself to corruption charges in 2015

Answer: Otto Pérez Molina

Molina was elected President of Guatemala in 2011. As chief of military intelligence in 1993 he had been instrumental in the removal of President Jorge Serrano. He was also part of a military group who supported the coup-d'état against President Effrain Rios Montt in 1983.
8. Veteran SE Asian president who resigned in 1998, arguably the most corrupt politician in modern times

Answer: Suharto

Second President of Indonesia, former army man Suharto became president in 1967 when he displaced his predecessor Sukarno and after conducting an anti-communist purge with an estimated death toll of 500,000. He presided over a period of economic growth with vastly improved health, education and living standards for the population.

The 1997 Asian financial crisis led to widespread unrest in Indonesia and his resignation in 1998. He was given a state funeral in 2008. Transparency International estimate that he embezzled between $15 and $35 billion during his 31-year term.
9. Czech prime minister whose wife's business dealings contributed to his resignation in 2005

Answer: Stanislav Gross

His nine-month term as the Czech Republic's youngest prime minister was tainted with allegations of nepotism, police corruption and dodgy state privatisations. He himself was forced to resign over financial irregularities. He died in 2015 aged 45.
10. Tunisian president of 23 years' standing who fled the country in 2011 during the Arab Spring

Answer: Zine El Abidine Ben Ali

Ben Ali came to power following a medical coup-d'état. His ageing predecessor had suffered poor health for years and when a group of doctors produced a report that he was mentally unbalanced, Ben Ali rapidly took over. Some reports suggest he ordered the report.

The Tunisian Revolution (or Jasmine Revolution) of 2011 saw him flee to Saudi Arabia after France refused to allow his plane to land. Corruption charges followed.
