Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Movie: "_________________" (1993). Cast included Denzel Washington and Antonio Banderas. Had a well-known theme song.

Answer: Philadelphia

Tom Hanks won his first Oscar for this one. He played a gay man with AIDS. Antonio played his lover. Denzel was his lawyer. "The Streets of Philadelphia" was the theme, by none other than Bruce Springsteen.
2. Movie: "Crazy in ____________" (1999). Starred Melanie Griffith, Rod Steiger, and Meat Loaf.

Answer: Alabama

Melanie plays an abused wife who takes off for Hollywood to find fame and fortune in the flickers. Unfortunately, she finds out she's in Hollywood, Florida and therefore not getting any work. Okay, just kidding. She actually kills her husband, chops his ugly head off for good measure, and takes it with her to keep her company on her long drive to LaLa land. Remember to have the kids watch this one! Film was directed by Antonio Banderas, which might explain it.
3. Movie: "___________ Blues" (1990). A crime movie starring Alec Baldwin and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Answer: Miami

Baldwin plays a career criminal who starts his own crime wave in Dade County. Leigh is a college student/hooker (now there's a way to pay tuition!) he hooks up with. Guess it's not exactly heart-warming family fare.
4. Musical composition: "_______________ Concerto Number One," by Bach.

Answer: Brandenburg

Musical genius Johann Sebastian Bach, the original, accept-no-substitutes Bach, born 1685, died 1750, wrote 6 Brandenburg Concerti among his myriad brilliant compositions.
5. Song: "________," by Billy Joel, 1977 on the album "The Stranger."

Answer: Vienna

"When will you realize Vienna waits for you?" These lyrics are from "Vienna" on the album "The Stranger," 1977, one of the Master's greatest works. "Cold Spring Harbor" is the title of Billy's first, pretty obscure, album. The title is a picturesque town on Long Island's north shore, near Billy's home in Levittown. "Allentown" is also one of his songs, but it was released in 1982 on "The Nylon Curtain."
6. Movie: "_______________" (1990) Starred Robert Redford and Lena Olin.

Answer: Havana

Redford plays a professional gambler who goes to Havana in December, 1958, on the eve of Castro's rise to power. He gets involved with Olin's female revolutionary, and of course problems ensue.
7. Play: "__________________, Here I Come" by Bryan Friel.

Answer: Philadelphia

Friel's play concerns a young Irishman who is about to leave his native village and emigrate to the US. We learn about him and his conflicting feelings for his home town. The play originated in Dublin and had its American premiere at the Helen Hayes Theatre in 1966.
8. Song: "The Battle of ______________" (1959) by Johnny Horton.

Answer: New Orleans

"Battle" was a huge hit, the number one song of the year. It was a humorous look at the famous battle through the eyes of one of the American soldiers: "Oh, we fired our guns and the British kept a-comin'." It was written by Jimmy Driftwood, a high school history teacher who wrote songs to teach history to his students. Hope Jimmy got rich off this one!
9. Painting: "______________ Boogie Woogie" by Piet Mondrian.

Answer: Broadway

Piet Mondrian is one of the central figures of art in the 20th century. He was born in the Netherlands in 1872. His best-known work is abstract, mainly consisting of lines and squares and compositions of color and balance which resemble stained glass windows or tiled floors. (Art experts, please forgive my ignorance.) He was forced to leave his country during WW II and settled in NYC, where he produced "New York" (1941-42) and "Broadway Boogie Woogie" (1942-43), both of which you can see at artchive.com.

He died in New York in 1944.
10. Movie: "_______________ Noon" (2000) with Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson

Answer: Shanghai

"Shanghai Noon" is a fun, comedy western with Chan newly arrived in the Wild West. He goes through quite a lot of trouble trying to rescue a kidnapped princess (Lucy Liu), sometimes with the help of Owen Wilson as a train robber. The title is a pun on "High Noon."
