Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When attending a Chinese wedding it is traditional to give a gift of money in an envelope which matches the traditional color of a Chinese wedding dress. It is not a color chosen by many brides in the Western world. So in what will you be placing your wedding gift?

Answer: A red envelope

The amount of money in your red envelope should be at least equivalent to the cost incurred by the family in having you attend the wedding. For example it should at least match the cost of your share of the catering. Those with closer familial ties to the bride or groom may be expected to contribute more. The color red is considered to be lucky.
2. On the night before a German wedding the couple might attend an informal party known as polterabend. What happens there that some people might have associated with Greek culture rather than German?

Answer: They smash plates

This is a tradition that is supposed to bring good luck. The bride and groom have to clear up the mess together, to show their unity. Some see this not so much as a tradition, but as an excuse to have a good party with alcohol and flying crockery before the wedding. Although smashing plates is also a Greek tradition at numerous events, including weddings, it is one that is now far less common than it used to be.
3. In which country, where the trousseau was invented, is it a common tradition to see the groom escort his mother down the aisle before the wedding?

Answer: France

A bridal trousseau is the clothes and linens assembled by the bride to be used in her wedding ceremony. It is a French word for a little bundle.
4. In both Spanish and Mexican weddings, a full Roman Catholic ceremony includes the groom giving some gold coins to his bride on the wedding day. It must be a very specific number of coins, one coin for Jesus Christ and each apostle. What is the correct number of coins to be included in what is called a gift of Arras?

Answer: Thirteen

The coins are blessed by the priest before the groom gives them to the bride. She may keep them in a special ornate box. They demonstrate the groom's commitment to supporting her.
5. "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" is an old English rhyme familiar to many people. It is still frequently observed at many weddings in Britain or Commonwealth countries such as Australia and New Zealand. What is the fifth line to that rhyme which hopefully does not cause too much discomfort on the wedding day?

Answer: A sixpence in your shoe

The five items each symbolize something. Something old is a link to the past. Something new is about optimism for the future. Something borrowed represents borrowed happiness. Something blue is for purity and fidelity. The sixpence in your shoe is meant to bring future prosperity.
6. Indian weddings can be very big occasions. One tradition is the baraat, or groom's procession. How would an Indian groom be most likely to arrive at the wedding ceremony?

Answer: Riding a decorated white horse

The groom is greeted by the bride and her family. The bride and the groom then exchange floral garlands which are worn around their necks.
7. There are many different types of dowry around the world. In Fiji, tabua is a highly prized dowry item. Tabua is very difficult to obtain. What exactly is it?

Answer: A whale's tooth

Tabua are whale teeth that have been pieced and braided. They would normally be taken from the lower jaw of sperm whales that had been stranded on Fijian beaches. Whales don't get stranded very often, so whale teeth became a prized possession because of their scarcity.
8. In one democratic, egalitarian country they don't like the concept of the father giving away the bride as it implies ownership. For that reason the bride and groom walk down the aisle together. What country is that?

Answer: Sweden

Sweden has an interesting tradition at wedding receptions. If the groom has to leave the room for any reason all the men line up to kiss the bride. Likewise if the bride has to leave the room the women line up to kiss the groom.
9. In what country are you most likely to attend a wedding reception where the decorations include 1001 origami models of cranes?

Answer: Japan

In ancient Japan, folding 1000 cranes was thought to be lucky. However in the 20th century people started to create artwork for weddings with 1,001 cranes. The extra crane is supposed to bring extra luck. In Japan, odd numbers are also considered to be more lucky than even numbers. The cranes are folded using gold foil and carefully placed together to form a design, usually a family crest. The whole thing is then framed together as a piece of art for the wedding reception.
10. What item of the groom's clothing might be cut up at a Brazilian or Italian wedding so that the individual pieces can be sold or auctioned at the wedding reception to raise money for the happy couple?

Answer: Tie

Guests may purchase a piece of the tie either as a souvenir from the wedding or simply as a way of donating money to the bride and groom.
