Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bananas grow in many countries world wide, but where were they first domesticated as a crop?

Answer: Papua New Guinea

The banana is a large herbaceous flowering plant from the genus Musa that is native to the Pacific and Australia region. Plantains are from the same genus, but are generally eaten cooked. There is evidence that bananas were cultivated in the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea as far back as 5000BCE.
The Portuguese introduced bananas to the New World in the 16th Century.
2. Of which vitamin is the banana a good source?

Answer: B6

And contrary to popular belief, they are not a particularly high source of potassium. Yes they have some, but it is less than their manganese content, for example. One hundred grams of banana will give you 31 per cent of your daily B6 requirement. (The potassium content also makes them naturally radioactive.)
3. According to a song by Harry Chapin, how many bananas do the people of Scranton Pennsylvania manage to eat each day?

Answer: 30,000 lbs

"It was just after dark when the truck started down the hill that leads into Scranton Pennsylvania
Carrying 30,000 lbs of bananas..."
This was Chapin's song about a driver crashing his truck as he drove in the city's daily banana supply. Chapin was a consummate concert performer and "30,000 lbs" was one of his most popular songs.
4. Despite being a comparatively latecomer to banana growing, by the end of the 20th Century which of these had become the world's largest exporter of bananas?

Answer: Ecuador

Commercial banana-growing in Ecuador dates to 1910 and increased significantly in the 1920s as the country sought to fill a gap left by the collapse of its cacao industry. It was not until after the Second World War that banana exporting really took off, thanks to Government subsidies and the construction of new roads. By the early 1960s, Ecuador was supplying more than a quarter of the bananas on the world export market. That figure was 28 per cent by Year 2000, representing about four million metric tons of the world's 14.1 million metric tons of banana exports. The USA was Ecuador's largest market. Bananas became Ecuador's second most valuable export commodity, after crude oil. [Source: Human Rights Watch: History of Ecuador Banana Production and Exports.]

The Dominican Republic and France were also leading exporters. Iceland became a producer and exporter of bananas in 1941. They were produced commercially, in greenhouses, until about 1958.
5. Many people will remember the "Banana Splits" from childhood television days. What line of work did Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork engage in?

Answer: Rock band

The Banana Splits were a bunch (sorry) of furry rock stars that had an hour long show that first aired on US TV in 1969. The group performed sketches and songs.
Which leads me neatly to my favourite Banana Splits joke: "How do cowboys tally up the number of cattle they are herding? They count the footprints in the sand and divide by four." (Even after 40 years that one still cracks me up.)
6. Many countries with large domestic populations produce and consume most of their own bananas and are therefore not significant exporters. By the end of the 20th Century, which of these countries was the world's largest banana producer?

Answer: India

According to the National Horticultural Board of India, at the end of the 20th Century the country was growing 14 million tonnes of banana. Only 0.05% of the total crop was exported. The world production at that time was 86m tonnes.
The wrong answers were major net exporters of bananas, of which Colombia was producing, and exporting, about half of India's total crop.
7. Day O!: Which singer was closely associated with the "Banana Boat Song"?

Answer: Harry Belafonte

"Come mister tally man tally me bananas
(daylight come and me wanna go home)
Come mister tally man tally me bananas
(daylight come and me wanna go home)
Lift six foot seven foot eight foot bunch!
(daylight come and me wanna go home)..."

This is a traditional Jamaican song that Belafonte first recorded in 1956. It became a signature song for Belafonte in his subsequent carrier. (The song was earlier recorded by Edric Connor and the Caribbeans in 1952). In 1956 a slightly different version was recorded by The Tarriers, who had a US Number Four pop hit.
8. In the United Kingdom, typically how many bananas does each person eat each year?

Answer: 100

According the trade organisation Banana Link, people in the UK eat 10 kgs of bananas each year. That is about 100 each, five billion among us all. Bananas are the world's most popular fruit. Each year 105 million tonnes are grown in 105 countries.
9. According to the song "Yes! We Have No Bananas", what was the nationality of the shopkeeper who disappointed those looking for the tasty fruit?

Answer: Greek

"There's a fruit store on our street
It's run by a Greek
And he keeps good things to eat
But you should hear him speak!
When you ask him anything, he never answers "no"
He just "yes"es you to death, and as he takes your dough He tells you
"Yes! we have no bananas
We have-a no bananas today..."

The song was written by Frank Silver and Irving Cohn for the 1922 Broadway revue "Make It Snappy" and was sung by Eddie Cantor. It was then covered by Billy Jones and other collaborators and was a Number One hit in 1923. Jimmy Durante often sang it on his TV show and even Homer Simpson sang a version.
10. How many varieties of banana are known to exist world wide?

Answer: 1,000

While the totality of bananas is divided into about 50 groups, the "Cavendish" banana is the most produced variety for export.
11. If I crushed together digestive biscuits, butter, double cream and bananas, what kind of delicious pie would I be making?

Answer: Banoffee Pie

Then you need butter, castor sugar and condensed milk for the caramel that goes onto the base. Three bananas will be needed for a pie that will serve up to eight people. Just add fresh cream or ice cream and you will have a tasty - if calorie-high - delight.
12. As part of an advertising commercial, a banana company produced the jingle "bananas like these don't grow on trees." Is that botanically correct?

Answer: True

Yes, it is true. The banana plant is a herb not a tree. They grow from a root structure that produces an above ground stem that grows to between 15 and 30 feet. The plant is a herb; the banana is classified as a berry.
13. Who directed the 1971 comedy movie "Bananas"?

Answer: Woody Allen

Allen also co-wrote and starred in the movie, with Louise Lasser, and Carlos Montalban. It is based around a plot to assassinate the president of a fictional 'banana republic'. After a series of twists in the successful coup, Allen's character becomes president.
14. True or false: In 1994, European Union bureaucrats ruled that all imported bananas must be straight, not curved.

Answer: False

It is a great myth that has persisted for years. The kernel of truth is that the EU wanted regulations that gave conformity to the quality of the fruit. The bureaucrats may well have preferred that all bananas are straight but what the rules state is bananas should be "free from malformation or abnormal curvature". Class 1 bananas can have "slight defects of shape", and Class 2 bananas can have greater "defects of shape".

The EU did not define "abnormal curvature".
15. When he became President of Zimbabwe in 1980, what law did Canaan Banana introduce?

Answer: Made it illegal to laugh at his name

People may have been laughing in Zimbabwe in 1980, but they are not laughing now.
Canaan Banana was the first President of the new country, having fought in the bloody war of independence. In 1997 he was arrested for misuse of power and sexual abuse. He fled to South Africa but was persuaded to return home and was sentenced to ten years in jail, with nine years suspended.
In an obituary in November 2003, "The Daily Telegraph" (London) noted: "Banana had some difficulty investing the office of president with the required aura of reverence and in 1982 a law was passed in Zimbabwe forbidding jokes about the president's name..."
