Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bahrain is an archipelago with the main island being Bahrain Island. Approximately how much of the nation's land area is composed of this island?

Answer: 80%

The majority of the population of Bahrain lives on this island, the largest of the archipelago. The capital city, Manama, is situated on the north-eastern tip of Bahrain Island.
2. The King Fahd Causeway is a series of causeways and bridges that connects Bahrain to Saudi Arabia across the Persian Gulf. What city of Saudi Arabia does it connect to, from Bahrain?

Answer: Khobar

The King Fahd Causeway was completed in 1986, with construction starting in 1981. The causeway was built for travel, but also to build stronger bonds with Saudi Arabia. The idea of building a bridge between the two countries had long been intriguing to both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia's rulers.

It was the law of Bahrain to drive on the left, until 1967 when it was changed to the right. This was to bring it into line with neighbouring countries, which was fortunate for the construction of the causeway, as citizens had been used to driving on the right for nearly two decades by the time it was built.

Women were banned from driving in Saudi Arabia from 1957-2018, which once made the King Fahd Causeway the only bridge in the world where women could drive on one side, but not the other.

Khobar is a city in the easternmost province of Saudi Arabia, Eastern Province.
3. Which of these landmarks of Bahrain is located in the desert area of Sakhir?

Answer: Bahrain International Circuit

The Bahrain International Circuit opened to the public in 2004, with construction plans being established by Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. It hosts the Bahrain Grand Prix annually.

As alcohol is illegal in Bahrain, the drivers do not pop champagne at the end of a racing event, instead they use a non-alcoholic rosewater beverage called "Waard".
4. What is the second-largest island of Bahrain?

Answer: Muharraq Island

Muharraq Island is situated 2.5 miles east of the capital, Manama, and Bahrain International Airport is also located on it.

Muharraq Island used to be called Moharek, but the island is now named after Muharraq City, the former capital of Bahrain.
5. What is the largest mosque in Bahrain?

Answer: Al-Fateh

The Al Fateh Grand Mosque is not only the largest mosque in Bahrain, it is one of the largest mosques in the world. The mosque has a 7,000 person capacity and was opened to the public in 1988.

The mosque is named after Ahmed al-Fateh (Ahmed the Conqueror) who conquered Bahrain in 1783.
6. What is the main cargo port of Bahrain?

Answer: Mina Salman

Mina Salman is named after Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa I, who ruled Bahrain from 1942 until he died, in 1961.

Mina Salman was a natural harbour until it was used as a commercial port, which now stretches over 80 hectares. It began operating in 1962.
7. Al-Dukhān Hill is the highest point in Bahrain. What other name does it go by?

Answer: Mountain of Smoke

Al-Dukhān Hill is also called "Mountain of Smoke" because of the haze that forms around the top of the hill, on hot days. Bahrain's terrain is mainly flat, and Al-Dukhān Hill is only 440 feet high.
8. The shrine and grave of Zayd ibn Suhan, a follower and companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, is located in what village of Bahrain?

Answer: Malkiya

Malkiya is a village on the western coast of Bahrain Island. Malkiya SCC is a football/soccer club, in the top division of Bahrain's football teams. Their football stadium, Khalifa Sports City Stadium, is in Isa Town which is about a 20 minute drive away from Malkiya.

9. Which mosque of Bahrain is believed to be the oldest?

Answer: Khamis

This mosque is believed to have been constructed as early as 692 AD. It is located in the village of Khamis, which is situated between Manama and Isa Town.

Bahrain is one of the first ever Muslim nations, and is considered by historians to have been so at around 628AD, meaning that Bahrain was an Islamic nation just four years after the death of the Islamic prophet Mohammad.
10. The Hawar Islands are a 16 island archipelago owned by Bahrain. What other country are they close to?

Answer: Qatar

The Hawar Islands are approximately ten miles away from Bahrain, and only about a mile away from the west coast of Qatar, but Bahrain own the islands. Bahrain and Qatar did dispute these islands, but this was resolved in 2001. Qatar possess Janan Island, which is nearby.

The islands host a variety of birds, including the threatened species of bird, the Socotra cormorant. This cormorant is endemic to the Persian Gulf.
