Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There is a town called Kokomo in a state whose motto is "The Crossroads of America". Believe it or not, it is not the place referenced in the Beach Boys song, nor is it close to an ocean. If you take US Route 31 due south for about 40 miles, you will arrive at what large city?

Answer: Indianapolis, IN

Kokomo, Indiana was named after Chief Kokomo (aka Ma-Ko-Ko-Mo), who according to the founder of the town, David Foster, was "the ornriest man I knew." There is very little information actually documented about the Chief, but he is present in folktales from the region.
2. There is a ghost town called Bumble Bee nestled in the Bradshaw Mountains in a state whose name adorns the cans of a popular tea beverage. If you take I-17 due south for about 50 miles, you will arrive at what large city that holds the record for hottest temperature recorded in a major US city?

Answer: Phoenix, AZ

Bumble Bee, Arizona was a stagecoach stop for miners and settlers that never grew very large. It was named after nearby Bumble Bee Creek, so named because the area was crawling with hostile Indians "as thick as Bumble Bees". Once the railroad expanded west and nearby ores were diminished, the town did not survive long. It is now private property, but can be visited.
3. There is a town with the classy name of Cambridge in the "Land of 10,000 Lakes". Even though this is not the same Cambridge that is found in England, it is home to the Anoka-Ramsey Community College. If you take Route 65 due south for about 40 miles, you will arrive at what large city that was the birthplace of the artist Prince?

Answer: Minneapolis, MN

Cambridge, Minnesota lies on the Rum River, which meanders from the Mille Lacs Lake to the Mississippi River. Many Swedish immigrants settled in Cambridge and found work in such places as the potato starch factory and the electric lighting plant.
4. There is a town called Parkton where the movie "Guarding Tess" was shot. It is located in a county that forms part of the Mason-Dixon Line, and if you take I-83 due south for about 30 miles, you will arrive at what large city where Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner"?

Answer: Baltimore, MD

Parkton, MD is a small community that is mostly agricultural in nature. The Northern Central Railway used to pass right through Parkton, and Lincoln was reported to have once used this route to travel to Baltimore.
5. There is a moderately-sized town called Mooresville that has been home to many NASCAR team headquarters over the years, and sits just east of a large man-made lake called Lake Norman. If you go to the western edge of town, and take I-77 due south for about 25 miles, you will arrive at what major city?

Answer: Charlotte, NC

Mooresville, NC is so heavily associated with NASCAR that one of its nicknames is "Race City, USA". The town's early growth coincided with railroad development, but when the tracks were removed during the Civil War, the town's development stalled out.

After the war, Mooresville was incorporated in 1873, the railroad returned a decade later in 1883, a phone company was established another decade later in 1893, and the town continued to prosper into the 20th century.
6. There is a town called Bartlesville where the Phillips Petroleum Company was founded in 1917. In downtown Bartlesville, you can find Price Tower, which is the only skyscraper designed by Frank Lloyd Wright that was actually built. Located in the state where settlers "rushed" to claim unassigned lands in 1889, if you take US Route 75 due south for about 45 miles, you will arrive at what large city?

Answer: Tulsa, OK

Bartlesville, OK was formerly in an Indian Territory, and was named after Jacob Bartles who opened up a trading post in the area. Due to the effect of continentality (Oklahoma lies very far inland), the area can experience a large range of extreme temperatures.
7. There is a town called Mount Vernon that is very far from the namesake plantation in Virginia, but happens to be located in the state named for the president who called the one in Virginia home. Logging was the primary industry when the town was first established, and it is now the county seat of Skagit County, which hosts a Skagit Valley Tulip Festival every year. If you take I-5 due south for about 60 miles, you will arrive at what large city?

Answer: Seattle, WA

There are many towns in the USA named Mount Vernon, but there is only one in the state named after George Washington. Speaking of presidents, Mount Vernon is home to the historic Lincoln Theater built in 1926. Interstate 5 was built through the town in 1969.
8. There is a small town on the shore of Lake Ontario called Wilson that has a hamlet called Roosevelt Beach where British Commandos secretly trained during World War II. As you head due south, you may hear the epic rushing sound of a huge waterfall on your right. If you really wanted to stay faithful to the whole "due south" thing, you could take some 2-lane roads through farmlands, but if you take the recommended route down I-190 across Grand Island for about 35 miles, you will arrive at what large city?

Answer: Buffalo, NY

New York City, NY, though southeast from Wilson, is much much farther away than Buffalo (more like 380 miles). You may think that Wilson, with a beach named after a Roosevelt, was named or renamed after Woodrow Wilson, but that is not the case. It is thought to have been named after settler Luther Wilson.
9. There is an historic town in California called Sonoma, and though surrounded by beautiful wine country, can be heard ROARING with the sound of engines a few times a year. Sonoma Raceway is a road course that hosts several motorsports series, including the premier NASCAR Cup Series once a year. Located not far from the shore of San Pablo Bay, if you take Hwy 101 about 30 miles south and cross a famous bridge, you will arrive at what large Californian city?

Answer: San Francisco, CA

San Jose is actually larger than San Francisco and is also located in the San Francisco Bay Area, but would be more like 75 miles south of Sonoma. The origin of the town of Sonoma can be traced back to the founding of the Catholic Mission San Francisco Solano in 1823, in what was then Mexico. A couple decades later, the region was conquered by the U.S. during the Mexican-American War.
10. There is a town named after Davy Crockett in the "Lone Star State". Crockett is the county seat of the oldest county in its state and is also near the large Davy Crockett National Forest just to the east. If you take Rt 19 then I-45 due south for about 115 miles, you will arrive at what large city that has been a hub for human space exploration?

Answer: Houston, TX

The area's connection to Crockett himself may be somewhat tenuous, but apparently he had camped nearby on his way to the Alamo. Interestingly enough, Houston is in Harris County, not Houston County. Crockett is the fifth-oldest city in Texas and the county seat of Houston County, which is the oldest county in Texas.
