Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. TGNMTH (in Devon)
Answer: Teignmouth
Teignmouth is located on the south coast of Devon at the mouth of (you won't be surprised to hear) the river Teign. Originally a fishing port, particularly linked with Newfoundland, the development of the railways led to Teignmouth becoming a holiday resort. It is still a popular holiday destination in the early twenty-first century.
2. TNTGL (in Cornwall)
Answer: Tintagel
Situated on Cornwall's north coast, Tintagel is particularly known for its supposed connection to the Arthurian legends. King Arthur is said to have been conceived in the castle, and the ruins of Tintagel Castle are a magnet for tourists. Even if you don't believe in the myths surrounding Arthur, the location of the castle makes it well worth a visit.
3. TRQY (in Devon)
Answer: Torquay
Along with Brixham and Paignton, Torquay is part of the so called English Riviera on the southern coast of Devon. In common with most of the coastal towns of the region, Torquay is mainly supported by tourism. It is also the birthplace of the well known crime writer Agatha Christie.
4. TRR (in Cornwall)
Answer: Truro
The only city in Cornwall, Truro is the main administration centre for the county. It has a cathedral, built between 1880 and 1910, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Although located inland, Truro is a port due to being situated on the rivers Kenwyn, Allen and Truro.
5. STN (in Devon)
Answer: Seaton
Seaton is one of the towns of the Jurassic Coast, which runs from a point near Exmouth in Devon to Swanage, in Dorset. Other places near to Seaton are Beer and Axmouth. Lyme Regis and Weymouth are probably the best known towns on the Jurassic Coast. Seaton itself is known for its tramway to Colyton, built on part of the now redundant railway line. Easton can also be found in Devon, on Dartmoor.
6. BD (in Cornwall)
Answer: Bude
Bude is situated on the coast in the north eastern corner of Cornwall. The town began as a harbour and fishing port before being 'discovered' by the Victorians and becoming another seaside resort. As it is located on the north coast, i.e. the Atlantic, the beaches around Bude are particularly popular with surfers.
7. HNTN (in Devon)
Answer: Honiton
Honiton, unlike most of the towns in the quiz, is not on the coast. It is a market town, with history dating back to Roman times when it was located on the Fosse Way running from Lincoln to Exeter. Honiton is known for its lace making - lace made there was used for Queen Victoria's wedding dress - and pottery.
8. MSHL (in Cornwall)
Answer: Mousehole
Mousehole (pronounced something like Mowzal, not as it looks) is one of the most picturesque places in Cornwall, and there is a lot of competition. It is situated on Mount's Bay, where St. Michael's Mount can be accessed via a causeway at low tide. Mousehole still retains much of the charm of its origins as a fishing village.
9. L (in Cornwall)
Answer: Looe
The town is on the river of the same name. The name originates from the Cornish language, and translates from Logh as 'deep water inlet'. The town was another fishing port, on the south coast of the county, and still retains a small fleet of boats in the early twenty-first century.
10. XTR (in Devon)
Answer: Exeter
The county town of Devon, Exeter is situated a little inland on the River Exe - Exmouth is the resort situated where the river meets the sea. The cathedral, dedicated to St. Peter, dates from the late fourteenth century. It sustained damage in an air raid in 1942, with one chapel being completely destroyed and subsequently rebuilt.
The city itself was one of the Roman settlements in England, when it was known as Isca.
