Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The flag of Flanders has a yellow background, but what symbol is on it?

Answer: black lion

It's a black lion with red claws and a red tongue. According to popular belief it was Filips of the Elzas who brought the lion symbol to Flanders after winning a battle during the crusades. But this is almost certainly not true since he already had a lion on his shield and helmet before he even left to Jerusalem in 1177.
2. The most important day in Flemish history, July 11th, 1302 was the Battle of the Golden Spurs. How did the battle get this name?

Answer: The French nobles and knights wore golden spurs.

The proud French thought that they would easily defeat this small urban militia consisting only of an infantry of 9000 men. So a lot of nobles and knights came to fight in their shiniest armour with actual real gold spurs. However more than a thousand of them were killed and after the Flemish victory the French 'golden spurs' were hung in a church in Kortrijk to commemorate this battle.
