Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Antwerp is the capital of the eponymous province in the north of Belgium. Which country borders the province of Antwerp?

Answer: Netherlands

All these countries share a border with Belgium. The Netherlands are to the north and border the provinces of West-Flanders, East-Flanders, Antwerp and Limburg.
Germany borders the province of Liege, as also does Luxembourg for a few kilometres. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is of course the immediate negihbour of the Belgian province of Luxembourg. France borders the provinces of Luxembourg, Namur, Hainaut and West-Flanders.
2. Antwerp is one of the major European port cities. Which river grants Antwerp access to the Atlantic Ocean?

Answer: Scheldt

Antwerp is based on the banks of the Scheldt. The oldest docks are situated on the right bank, as well as the old city center. The left bank was developed later on, with many apartment blocks and some of the largest docks in the world. In 2005 the Deurganckdock (with over 5 km of quais) was opened, and the authorities have planned the Saeftinghedock - a dock measuring 10,7 square km - five times the surface of Monaco.

The Leie (in French the Lys), the Meuse and the Senne are other important rivers in Belgium.
3. The city of Antwerp has merged in 1976 with several other villages. These former villages are known by a word that most English speaking people will recognise in the abbreviation CBD. What is that word?

Answer: Districts

Antwerp has incorporated Berendrecht-Lillo-Zandvliet, Ekeren, Merksem, Deurne, Borgerhout, Berchem, Wilrijk and Hoboken - all situated on the right bank of the Scheldt. The left bank was already incorporated in the city of Antwerp.

Most cities in the English speaking world have a Central Business District. Antwerp does not have such a facilty, businesses are spread out over various quarters. For instance, the diamond trade is concentrated near the Central Station (one of the main railway stations), while many banks have built a regional site in Berchem since 2000.
4. Antwerp is quite a busy traffic hub. The Ring (circular motorway) around Antwerp is one of the busiest places for cars and lorries all over Europe. Which tunnel under the Scheldt opened in 1969 and was soon oversaturated?

Answer: Kennedy tunnel

One of the main issues for the traffic around Antwerp is that many trucks and cars need to cross the Scheldt.
The first tunnel (the Waasland tunnel) opened in 1933 and is one of the longest tunnels in Belgium. But this tunnel had two major drawbacks: first of all, it allowed only one file of traffic in both directions. Secondly, the Antwerp part is mid-city, so drivers from the left bank arrive in a very congested city centre.
The Kennedy tunnel opened in 1969 and connects the E17 highway (Antwerp-Ghent) with the Antwerp Ring, on which connect the E19 highway (Brussels - Antwerp - Breda), the E313 highway (Antwerp-Liege) and the E34 (Bruges- Antwerp - Duisburg).
The Liefkenshoek tunnel opened in 1987 and is subject to a toll, contrary to the other tunnels mentioned in this question.
The Tijsmans tunnel doesn't pass under the Scheldt, but only under the Kanaaldok (one of the docks on the right bank of the Scheldt).
5. Antwerp has an airport in the District of Deurne. Can one board there a nonstop flight towards the USA?

Answer: No

The Antwerp airport is rather limited. The short runways don't allow the take-off and landing for routes of over 3,000 km, so only most of Europe, and some places in North Africa can theoretically be reached.
Antwerp is frequently used for training flights for aspiring pilots.
6. Antwerp has installed a Low Emission Zone in 2017. To put it roughly, all of the Old City is in this protected zone. Which kind of emission is targeted?

Answer: Exhaust from motor vehicles

Whilst all these may be a concern for a clean environment, the Low Emission Zone is intended solely against vehicle exhaust gases. Every motor vehicle (car, truck, tractor...) using the roads in the Antwerp City District should conform to the most recent exhaust rules. Otherwise the conductor will be fined.
Antwerp was the first major city in Belgium to introduce this Low Emission Zone, but several other cities are at least contemplating following suit.
7. Which is the official language in Antwerp?

Answer: Dutch

Antwerp is a city with many nationalities. Sources differ, but there would be over 150 different nationalities represented in the City of Antwerp (including the districts).
However, the Belgian government has strict language laws. For all of the province of Antwerp, the official language is Dutch.

Antwerp denizens sometimes use a local dialect (Antwerps) which confuses many people from other Dutch speaking regions.
8. What is the average climate in Antwerp?

Answer: Maritime climate

Average temperatures in Antwerp are quite moderate, with monthly average high temperatures not exceeding 22° C and monthly average low temperatures above the freezing point. It rains on average almost half of the year, without any dry season.
Although the weather is a favourite topic of discussion (and of complaints), the absence of extreme situations makes it quite pleasing.
9. Which of the following is one of the major economic activities in Antwerp?

Answer: Oil refining

The Port of Antwerp deals with many different cargoes. One of the economically most attractive products transiting through the Port of Antwerp is crude oil. There are some five oil refineries and a bunch of petrochemical companies in the harbour area, and the output is quite diverse.

All over Belgium, the coal mines have closed down. Lumber is only a marginal product for Belgium, and comes especially from the Ardennes Forest - not from Antwerp. Most aeronautical industrial companies in Belgium are also situated in the south of the country, not in Antwerp.
10. Antwerp is in the time zone UTC +01:00. Which other city is in the same time zone (when we don't take into account the Daylight Savings Time)?

Answer: Windhoek (Namibia)

UTC (Controlled Universal Time) is a scientific measurement system that starts at the normal time on the Prime Meridian. Thus UTC 00:00 is the standard time in (for instance) the United Kingdom.

Most mainland countries in western Europe (including Belgium) are one hour in advance on the UK. So their standard time is UTC+01:00. When Daylight Saving Time is applicable (end of March - end of October), Belgium and thus Antwerp observe UTC+02:00.

The red herrings refer to the cities close to where my fellow racers live. Shuehorn lives close to Atlanta, in the time zone UTC-05:00. Lones78 lives near Perth, in the time zone UTC+08:45. And zorba_scank calls Mumbai home - in the time zone UTC+05:30.
