Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the best known cavemen is the cartoon character Fred Flintstone. Which of these was his best friend and neighbour?

Answer: Barney Rubble

Created by the talented team of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, "The Flintstones" made its television debut on 30 September 1960 and earned a place in the history books by being the first animated series to be broadcast on primetime television in America. Set during the Stone Age, the series followed the daily lives of the Flintstones and their neighbours, the Rubbles. Fred and Barney both worked at a stone quarry owned by Mr. Slate.

Their families were close as well with their wives being best friends and their children being raised together. Lest you mistake the series for an accurate description of the past, the cartoon also had the characters keeping dinosaurs as pets!
2. "One Million B.C." is a fantasy film that starred Victor Mature, Carole Landis and Lon Chaney, Jr. in the lead roles. Was the film nominated for any Oscars?

Answer: Yes

The film released in 1940 and as suggested by the title, was set in a period in early human history. The story followed two tribes - the Rock Tribe and the Shell Tribe and an idealistic young man, played by Victor Mature, who hopes to unite them. The romantic angle was provided by Carole Landis who was the daughter of the chief of the rival tribe. While the story may sound corny in the present day, the movie won two Oscar nominations for Best Musical Score and Best Special Effects.

The movie was remade in 1966 as "One Million Years B.C.", a film that is better remembered for Raquel Welch's turn in the lead role.
3. "The Inheritors" is a fictional story of the extinction of the last tribe of the Neanderthals. Which author, more famous for having written "Lord of the Flies", published this novel in 1955?

Answer: William Golding

William Golding was a British novelist whose most popular work is "Lord of the Flies", a story of a group of boys marooned on an island and their attempts to run their lives there. Golding was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature and was also knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

"The Inheritors" is an attempt at recreating the lives of the Neanderthals and describing the bonds shared by the tribesmen despite their inability to communicate using words. Ultimately the Neanderthals become extinct as they make way for the more evolved homo sapiens.
4. The prehistoric setting was also used by the comic strip "B.C.". Who was the creator of the strip?

Answer: Johnny Hart

Answer: Short story

The character of Conan the Barbarian was created by Robert E. Howard, a writer of pulp fiction. 7. "Ice Age" is an animated film that released in 2002. Which of these was *not* one of the main characters?

Answer: Danny, a dinosaur

The movie begins with all the animals embarking on a long journey to the south to escape the melting glaciers at the end of the ice age. Manny is a woolly mammoth who along the way is joined by a sloth named Sid. Entrusted with a small human baby by his dying mother, Manny and Sid must now work together to return the child to a human settlement. Diego is a smilodon, better known as a sabre-toothed cat, who starts off as a negative character before he has a change of heart.
