Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the largest Irish island?

Answer: Achill

Achill is the largest, and connected by a bridge to the mainland. The next largest is in the Aran Islands, called Inishmore. Aran Island is not in the Aran Islands, but some miles to the north. Rathlin is in Northern Ireland, but the smallest of the four.
2. Leaving the UK going west from Scotland, which is the last island or island group you reach before Canada?

Answer: Rockall

Though just a large rock, Rockall is above land in all tides. There was an attempt to colonise it by Greenpeace activists who wanted to claim it as their own. St Kilda was the last inhabited land but was evacuated in the early 20th century. North Rona is isolated but north-west of Scotland, while the Monach Islands are both inhabited and west of the other Hebrides.
3. Which island within the North American continent is actually part of a different country?

Answer: St Pierre and Miquelon

St Pierre and Miquelon is a tiny French island just off Newfoundland. It's the sole non-American presence within the USA and Canada. The others are in Canada and in the Gulf of St Lawrence.
4. One set of Channel islands is British and off the coast of France, but where are the other Channel Islands to be found?

Answer: USA

The Channel Islands, located in California, off the coast of Los Angeles, like the British namesakes are also a popular resort area and also make up a National Park. The main islands are Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, Santa Barbara and Anacapa, and are in the Santa Barbara Channel.

The main British English Channel Islands, off the French coast, voted to be British when given a choice. They are, (in size order), Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm, with many other smaller ones. Each is self-governing rather than having any central form of rule.
5. Which is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea?

Answer: Sicily

Sicily is just the largest, at 25,700 sq km and with a population of around 5 million in 2005. Sardinia comes next, almost as big at 24,090 sq km and with a population of 1.65 million. Then Cyprus at 9,240 sq km with slightly over 740,000 and finally Corsica at 8,680 sq km with around 272,000.
6. When driving from Buffalo, NY, to Niagara Falls on the direct road, which island do you drive across?

Answer: Grand Island

The main road between towns is Interstate 190, which crosses Grand Island end to end, with the Niagara River to the west. The length of the island is around six miles. Navy Island is just to the north, the other two I made up.
7. Which island was called the Malagasy Republic from 1970 to 1979?

Answer: Madagascar

Previously known as Madagascar, it became the Malagasy Republic, to return to its original name later. It became independent from France in 1958.
8. Which of these islands used to be a country in its own right, but is now incorporated within another?

Answer: Zanzibar

Before 1964 Zanzibar was a country by itself. It then joined with Tanganyika to form Tanzania, inserting the 'ZA' to represent its addition, combining with part of the word Tanganyika. Bioko is an island which is part of Equatorial Guinea on the opposite (west) side of Africa, which was originally called Fernando Poo, which I always found funny. Socotra is part of Yemen in the Indian Ocean. Zambia is a nearby country and not an island at all!
9. Which of these New England places is NOT a natural island?

Answer: Cape Cod

Cape Cod is a long peninsula surrounded by the other islands, all are popular holiday resorts for the people from the urban areas of Boston and New York City. Block is actually called 'Block island', but that part would have given it away!
10. Rhode Island in the USA is actually the name of a real island.

Answer: True

Though originally relating to the island itself, the state grew to include many other boroughs, but still includes the actual island, being to the south of the state, and only a small fraction of the total state's area. It's connected to the mainland by a bridge.
