On October 27, 1904, to be exact. The first train ran from City Hall to 145th St.
2. Secretary of State Colin Powell was raised in:

Answer: The Bronx

General Powell is a Bronx boy. His first job was at a toy store called J Sixers in his neighborhood. He is also a graduate of City College.
3. The first Subway Series (a World Series in which two New York teams competed) took place in:

Answer: 1921

The two teams involved were the New York Giants and the New York Yankees. The Giants won, five games to three. This was also the last best-of-nine Series.
4. There are many TV series filmed in New York. Which of these is not mostly filmed there?

Answer: "NYPD Blue"

"NYPD Blue" only comes to New York two or three times a year to film exteriors. "Sex and the City" and "Law and Order" are entirely filmed in New York. "The Sopranos" films a few of its exteriors in New Jersey.

Mr. Letterman lives in Westchester. All the others live in Manhattan.

In September of 1920, in the middle of a work day, a horse-drawn cart filled with explosives and sash weights exploded in front of the Morgan Bank. More than 20 people were killed. The bank was back to work the next morning. You can still see the gouges that were left in the main entrance on Wall Street.

110th St. is sometimes called Central Park North, but only by real estate developers.

Mrs. Parker was born Dorothy Rothschild on August 23, 1893, at her parents' summer home on the Jersey Shore. She was not expected for another month. She died in Manhattan in June, 1967.

Answer: Louis Armstrong

Mr. Armstrong is buried at Flushing Cemetery. Mr Houdini at Machpelah, Mr. Robinson at Cypress Hills, and Mr. Bernstein at the Green-Wood, all in Brooklyn.

Cafe Society, opened in 1939 on Sheridan Square, was owned by Barney Josephson, a New Jersey shoe salesman. His first featured vocalist was Billie Holiday. She introduced the song, "Strange Fruit" there and stayed for two years. The Latin Quarter was owned by Barbara Walters' father, Lou Walters.

146 garment workers died, mostly from jumping from windows, when the fire was about to consume them. There were no fire exits, the doors were padlocked, and the fire escapes collapsed. Soon after, sweeping work safety laws were passed, and the Garment Workers unions became more powerful in protecting the rights of their members.
