Bologna is the capital of the Emilia Romagna region of Italy. It is also home to the oldest university in the Western world. Bologna is nicknamed "La dotta, la grassa, la rossa" that is, the learned one (for reasons obvious to you now), the fat one (because the local food is excellent), and the red one (because it tends to vote with the left).
