Question 1 of 10
1. Visualizing the solar system is tricky because it actually is a lot of empty space - imagine shrinking it to a diameter of 1 m - even the sun would be a tiny speck of less than 0.2 mm - not much to see! In Sweden you can find a model with a scale of 1: 20.000.000 - the largest in the world.

The inspiration for the Sweden Solar System was given by a 110m wide spherical and highly visible structure which is close to central Stockholm and represents the sun. Which of the following is this?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Let me take you to one of the boundaries of our solar system - the termination shock, where the solar wind meets the interstellar medium and slows down to the speed of sound in that medium. In the Sweden Solar System this would be near the northernmost town in Lapland, which takes its name from a bird. Which one is this?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Heading south and back toward Stockholm, through the Norrland Terrain with its vast boreal forests, you could easily miss the dwarf planet Pluto's model. It is 12 cm small and together with the model of its moon Charon can be found at a distance of 300km from Globen. The two sculptures are encased in two pillars of the rare mineral dellenite, which was formed by the same meteoric impact that formed the two nearby Dellen lakes. Can you guess the name of the locality? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Traveling further south towards Stockholm and the sun, we find the model of Neptune which at night is beautifully illuminated from the inside with a blue light. It has a diameter of 2.5m and can be found at a distance of 229 km from Stockholm in this town, the name of which means "south port".
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. A model of Uranus used to be some 160km away from Stockholm in the town of Gävle. It has been vandalised and a new model has been placed in the village of Lövstabruk, at a distance of 146 - corresponding to Uranus' closest approach to the sun. It was sponsored by a company that has a connection to the name of Uranus; can you figure out which one?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. While some of the moons of Saturn already have found their placeholders, the work on the representation of Saturn itself currently (in 2020) is still under way. It will be in a well known city some 70km north of Stockholm. Which one?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. The search for Jupiter brings us still further towards Stockholm. The representation of Jupiter should be at a distance of 40 km from Globen and have a diameter of 7 meters. It used to be a flower bed, in which Jupiter's famous stripes and the giant red spot were painted by flowers. Chances are that while traveling to, from and in Sweden, you have already passed close by this place. Where? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Of the inner planets, Mars at a distance of 230.000.000 km, is furthest away from the sun. Bearing in mind the scale of the model, where is the sculpture representing Mars located? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Going after models of comets and meteors, one has to travel in a different, south westerly, direction from Stockholm - after all those wanderers do not travel in our ecliptic but rather visit our cosmic vicinity from a different angle. Halley's Comet has not one, but four models. Three can be found outdoors of a science centre and are inspired by drawings of school children, one was cut by a laser out of a solid block of glass and can be found inside the centre. At 260km from Globen, where can this science centre be found? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Our last destination in the Sweden Solar System is the model of comet Oumuamua which was inaugurated in 2018. Oumuamua was a recent visitor to our solar system and, due to its shape and way of motion, it was speculated that it might be a space probe from an alien civilization. The model has a diameter of 0.3mm and can be found in Plönninge, a community on the coast of the Kattegat arm of the North Sea, some 100 km south of which large Swedish city?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Ericsson Globe

While not being one of the more traditional tourist attractions, the Ericsson Globe - called Globen by the natives - features prominently in Stockholm's skyline. Outer elevators to the top offer spectacular views of the city. Primarily, Globen serves as a sports arena and concert hall.
2. Let me take you to one of the boundaries of our solar system - the termination shock, where the solar wind meets the interstellar medium and slows down to the speed of sound in that medium. In the Sweden Solar System this would be near the northernmost town in Lapland, which takes its name from a bird. Which one is this?

Answer: Kiruna

The town of Kiruna lies north of the Arctic Circle. It is a good place to watch the breathtaking Northern Lights caused by the interaction of the solar wind with the magnetic field of the earth, for tourists and also for scientists. Aurora Borealis, another name for the Northern Lights, is studied at the Swedish Institute for Space Physics in Kiruna. Near the entrance of the institute you can find the foundation for a sculpture which shall represent the termination shock.

Answer: Delsbo

Delsbo is a community belonging to the historical Hälsingland province. You may remember it as one of Nils Holgerson's stops on his journey with the geese. The very rural area around Delsbo is famous for hiding "a village behind every tree".
4. Traveling further south towards Stockholm and the sun, we find the model of Neptune which at night is beautifully illuminated from the inside with a blue light. It has a diameter of 2.5m and can be found at a distance of 229 km from Stockholm in this town, the name of which means "south port".

Answer: Söderhamn

Söderhamn, which started as a fishing village, lies on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia and also belongs to the historical province Hälsingland. Attractions of this area are the cultural heritage Hälsingland farms, which are large and lavishly decorated farm houses.

Answer: Forsmark Nuclear Power Station

The chemical element Uranium, which is used as fuel in a nuclear power station, was named after the planet Uranus. This site of the model of Uranus is in the north of the historical province of Uppland which extends to Uppsala and Stockholm in the south between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea. If you are interested in rune stones, Uppland is the place to go - about half of Scandinavia's known rune stones can be found here.
6. While some of the moons of Saturn already have found their placeholders, the work on the representation of Saturn itself currently (in 2020) is still under way. It will be in a well known city some 70km north of Stockholm. Which one?

Answer: Uppsala

Uppsala is Sweden's fourth largest city. Domkyrka (Uppsala Cathedral) dominates the skyline and is the seat of the Archbishop of Uppsala, head of the church of Sweden. Uppsala University is Sweden's oldest university and the academic home of 18th century botanist Carl Linnaeus.
Where?

Answer: Arlanda Airport

Arlanda Airport, halfway between Stockholm and Uppsala, serves both cities. Meanwhile, since May 2019, there is a new representation of Jupiter, a brilliant ring of light in a hotel and conference centre at the airport. Even the four Galilean moons are represented.
8. Of the inner planets, Mars at a distance of 230.000.000 km, is furthest away from the sun. Bearing in mind the scale of the model, where is the sculpture representing Mars located?

Answer: still in Stockholm

The representations of Mercury, Venus, Earth with Moon, Mars are all within Stockholm. Visiting them will take you to the Mörby Shopping Centre in the Suburbs of Stockholm (Mars, 12km from Globen), the Swedish Museum of Natural History (Earth, 7.5km from Globen), KTH - the Royal Institute of Technology (Venus, 5.5km from Globen), and Stockholm City Museum (Mercury, 3km from Globen).

Answer: Skövde

Skövde lies between the two big Swedish lakes, Lake Vättern and Lake Vänern, about 260km southwest of Stockholm, in the heart of West Gothland. This historical province has been settled for some 10.000 years and has a rich history and diverse landscapes.

Answer: Göteburg

Founded in the 17th century, Göteburg is Sweden's second largest city and the largest harbor in Scandinavia. Due to its ice-free harbor on the Kattegat, and therefore the connection to the North Sea, it played - and still plays - a major role in the trade connections in and out of Sweden. Today Volvo is the biggest employer for the area. Tourists can find treasures of quirky sights, like the Feskekörka which is not a fish church, but a market hall and restaurant. And if you are into island hopping, there are ferries that bring you to the spectacular landscape of skerries in the Gothenburg archipelago. The fastest way to get to Plönninge from Göteborg is via E6 motorway, but if you have time, you can find much more pleasurable and scenic drives closer to the sea.

After this last stop, a two hour drive south (after all Oumuamua is hurtling away from us again) will take you to Malmö, Sweden's third largest and southernmost city and just across the bridge from Copenhagen, thus concluding our tour of Sweden.
