Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Chihuahuan Desert is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Which US state does it NOT touch?

Answer: California

The etymology of the Mexican state name Chihuahua is disputed. Some sources state it is derived from the Nahuatl language and means "a confluence of rivers". Nicknamed "The Big State", it is Mexico's largest state and for perspective, it is larger than the United Kingdom. The state is strongly associated with the desert named after it.

The Chihuahuan Desert also covers parts of the US states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. It is the largest desert on the continent of North America.
2. Which of these castles could you visit in the Italian region of Puglia (also known as Apulia)?

Answer: Castel del Monte

The Castel del Monte dates back to the 13th century. It was built by Emperor Frederick II who held multiple titles including that of King of Sicily, King of Germany, Holy Roman Emperor, and King of Jerusalem, at various points in time. The castle is believed to have inspired the fortress that features prominently in the famous Italian novel, "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco. It is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also features on the Italian 1 cent Euro coin.

The other three castles are also found in Italy - Castello Sforzesco (Milan), Castello Saraceno (Sicily), and Rocca Maggiore (Assisi).
3. Staying in Italy, in which city would you find the Doge's Palace?

Answer: Venice

Venice was once an independent republic and ruled by leaders titled Doges. The Doge was a magistrate and was elected to this position for life. Doges ruled Venice from 726 to 1797.

As can be inferred by the name, the Doge's Palace was the residence of the Doge. It was built in the 14th century and continues to be an important landmark in the city. In 1923 it was converted into a museum.
4. Across the shores of the Adriatic, the historical region of Dalmatia now belongs to which country?

Answer: Croatia

Dalmatia is one of the four historical regions of Croatia. The region stretches along the east coast of the Adriatic Sea.
