The Zimmermann note was sent by Germany to Mexico in January 1917. It proposed an alliance between Germany and Mexico, and said that Mexico would be able to take back the lands taken from it in the Mexican-American War. The threat of an actual invasion helped spur the United States to enter World War I.

The Great Depression was one of the worst times in American history. Stockholders lost $30 billion, and millions were unemployed. Many banks closed, so people were not able to get their savings out. The Depression didn't really improve much until the United States entered World War II.
