Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On February 13, 1960, what country exploded its first atomic bomb?

Answer: France

It was exploded over the Sahara Desert in southwestern Algeria. This successful test made France the fourth nation in the "atomic club", joining the U.S. (1945), Russia (1949) and Great Britian (1952). China "became a member" in 1964. A number of other countries now have some level of nuclear capability including Pakistan, Israel, India and who knows ...?
2. On October 1, 1961 Babe Ruth's 34 year old home run record was broken when New York Yankee star Roger Maris hit number 61. Who caught it?

Answer: Sal Durante

Shame on any baseball fan who missed this one; only someone in the stands (or in the bullpen) can catch a home run ball. Sal offered to give the ball to Maris but Roger told him to take the $5,000 offered by a restauranteur for the ball. He did and the ball eventually found it's way to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Double shame if you said Yogi Berra!
3. 1962 the first store of this discount retail chain was opened in the St. Paul suburb of Roseville, Minnesota. By 2010 they had expanded to more than 1,700 stores in 49 states. Who is this marketing giant?

Answer: Target

Target was formerly known as "The Dayton Hudson Corporation." After Wal-Mart it is the second largest discount chain in the United States. K-Mart and Wal-Mart were also started in 1962 ... but not in Minneapolis. Founded in 1986, by 2010 there were almost 4,000 Dollar Tree stores.
4. The year was 1963, the slogan was "Come to where the flavor is." What was the product?

Answer: Marlboro Cigarettes

Apparently, the flavor was located in Marlboro Country. For many years Marlboro was pushed as a ladies cigarette (with a red or white tip), but with the cowboy theme and Julie London singing a catchy new tune, it became the top selling cigarette brand. Before the macho transformation, the Marlboro slogan was "Mild as May." What a transformation!
5. Who was Republican candidate Barry Goldwater's running mate in the Presidential election of 1964?

Answer: William Miller

By the time the Republican Convention took place Goldwater had been demonized to the point where victory seemed hopeless. No "name" Republican wanted to go down with the Goldwater ship, and obscure NY Congressman Miller got the spot. Landslide loss!
6. In 1965 Dupont scientist Stephanie Louise Kwolek developed a compound known as Kevlar. Where would it find its widest use?

Answer: Bullet proof vests

Kevlar is a synthetic fabric five times stronger than steel. It provides protection by catching bullets (shrapnel etc.) in the multi-layered woven fabric, disbursing it over a wider area and lessening the impact. It has been credited with saving the lives of over 3,000 police officers.

The U.S. military uses Kevlar in a number of items including flak jackets and helmets; this has undoubtedly resulted in many saved lives.
7. On November 8, 1966 what Republican became the first African-American U.S. Senator elected in 85 years?

Answer: Edward Brooke

The popular Attorney General of Massachusetts won by a landslide in 1966 and was easily reelected in 1972. Personal and ethical problems plagued him during his 1978 reelection campaign and he lost decisevely to Paul Tsongas (who had the backing of Ted Kennedy). Claude Brown was the author of the classic 1965 novel "Manchild in the Promised Land."
8. Muhammed Ali made headlines in April 1967 by doing what?

Answer: He refused induction into the U.S. Army

May Britt was married to Sammy Davis Jr. from 1960 until their divorce in 1968. The Sonny Liston knock-out and the Muslim announcement took place in 1964.
9. This 1968 get-together was a festival of peace and love ... and a whole lot of music. Jimi Hendrix was but one of the performers at this star-studded event. With over 100,000 attendees it was the largest music festival to date and set the pattern for future music gatherings. Where was it held?

Answer: Hallandale, Florida

Though it was called "The Miami Pop Festival" it was actually held at Gulfstream Racetrack in nearby Hallandale, Florida (now Hallandale Beach). It was held on May 18-19, 1968 and, along with Hendrix, featured Chuck Berry, Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night, Mothers of Invention, and others. Michael Lang, promoter of this event, went on to co-produce the Woodstock Festival a year later.
10. On July 24, 1969 the three astronauts who executed the first moon landing returned to Earth. On the moon they left a plaque which included their names and one other. Whose name was that?

Answer: Richard Nixon

The plaque read: "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."
Among other items left was a patch from the Apollo 1 mission. That mission ended in 1967 when, during training, a fire engulfed the command module killing three astronauts.
