Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The forerunner of the present Dutch Labour Party (PvdA), named Social Democratic Labourers' Party (SDAP) was founded in 1894.

Answer: True

The SDAP was founded by people who thought it best to defend the interests of the labourers in Parliament.
2. What is the last name of the first leader of the SDAP?

Answer: Troelstra

Pieter Jelles Troelstra led the party from 1894 until 1925.
3. At the end of World War I, Mr. Troelstra, went to Russia in revolution in order to get help for a socialist revolution in Holland.

Answer: False

No, he did not. Inspired by the 1918 revolution in Germany, however, he tried to make his own revolution. His attempt failed however, which caused a setback for socialism. The Dutch have never been great revolutionaries.
4. When did the SDAP for the first time take part in a Dutch government?

Answer: 1939

In 1939, a week before the Second World War, the SDAP got two ministers in the newly formed government of Mr. De Geer.
5. What is the last name of the first Dutch socialist prime minister?

Answer: Drees

Willem Drees (1886-1988) is considered to be the real founder of the Dutch social welfare state. He started a state pension system (AOW).
6. How many socialist prime ministers have there been in Holland up to 2003?

Answer: three

They are: Willem Drees, Joop den Uyl and Wim Kok.
7. The fourth and last government led by Willem Drees came to an end in ...

Answer: 1958

In 1958 the catholic coalition partners (KVP) were fed up with the socialists and decided to form a new coalition with the liberals.
8. In 1966 a group of self proclaimed reformers, Nieuw Links (New Left) tried to give a new programme to the Labour Party. What is the name of the document in which they stated their demands?

Answer: Tien over Rood (Ten about Red)

Tien over Rood demanded, for instance, the abolition of the monarchy after the then reigning Queen Juliana and the recognition of East Germany.
9. In 1973 Joop den Uyl managed to form the most leftist government in Dutch history. It consisted of five parties. Apart from the Labour Party, the Catholics (KVP) and the Anti-Revolutionaries (ARP) these were:

Answer: Democrats 66 and the Radicals (PPR)

The Democrats 66 got one minister, the PPR two.
10. After a landslide victory in 1977, Joop den Uyl formed a second cabinet.

Answer: False

This is still the dream of many Dutch socialists. The Labour Party did win a major victory in 1977, but because of their arrogant behaviour after this they did not succeed in forming a coalition. Instead, the Christian Democrats formed a coalition with the liberals. Den Uyl never became prime minister again.
