Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Battle of the Plains of Abraham.

Answer: 1759

The walled city of Quebec was a major stronghold for New France and thought to be unconquerable. The surprise assault outside the city of British General James Wolfe changed that and proved to be the beginning of the end for French control of Canada. Both Wolfe and the French commander, Montcalm, died as a result of the battle.
2. Cholera epidemic spreads through Quebec.

Answer: 1832

An estimated ten percent of the population died. Grosse Ile, near Quebec, served as a quarantine station. All ships were stopped there and searched. Lack of medical knowledge at the time and poor sanitation contributed to the death rate. Sentiment in Quebec largely blamed the British government.
3. Founding of the city of Quebec.

Answer: 1608

Quebec began as a fur trading post, established by Samuel de Champlain. The location was also the site of an Iroquoian settlement, Stadacona. For decades, the population was relatively small, numbering about 550 in 1665. Quebec was the starting point for a number of French raids into New England during the wars of the seventeen and eighteenth century.
4. Founding of the city of Montreal.

Answer: 1642

Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve, Governor of New France, founded the fur trading post of Villa-Marie, which would later be known as Montreal. From 1642 to 1676 annual fur-trading meets took place here. By the 1690s, the settlement was walled and in 1705 was renamed Montreal. Like Quebec, it is believed that Montreal had been the site of a previous Iroquoian settlement.
5. Nearly 60% of electors in Quebec vote for remaining in Canada.

Answer: 1980

The Quebec Party called for the referendum. During the 1969s, the "Quiet Revolution" had brought about a secularization of Quebec's society and creation of a welfare state. The Quebec Part came to power at a provincial level in 1976. A similar referendum in 1995 ended with a much smaller majority (less than 51%) voting to keep Quebec in Canada.
6. Passage of the Quebec Act.

Answer: 1774

With this law, the British Parliament extended the boundaries of Quebec to the north bank of the Ohio River, including a large portion of the Great Lakes region of the United States. Within the area, Quebec had French civil law, British criminal law, government appointed by council, and religious freedom for Roman Catholics. Opposition to the act in the 13 British colonies to the Quebec Act, which included anti-French and anti-Catholic sentiment may have played a role in the lack of interest in Canada in joining the new United States.
7. Quebec is one of the first four provinces to join the Dominion of Canada.

Answer: 1867

The British North America Act of 1867 redivided the Province of Canada into Ontario and Quebec and joined them with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia into the Dominion of Canada. During the 19th and 20th centuries, six other provinces and three colonies became part of Canada.
8. Sixteenth premier of Quebec, Maurice Duplessis, comes to power.

Answer: 1936

Duplessis would serve as premier from 1936 to 1939 and from 1944 to 1959. He helped to organize the Union Nationale Party in Quebec, which exercised a leading role until the 1970s. Strong opinions for and against his policies were common during his premiership. He was known for favoring rural areas and a commitment to education.
9. The Stanley Cup is awarded to the Montreal AAA team.

Answer: 1894

The cup, donated by the Governor-General of Canada, Lord Stanley, was to be awarded to the best amateur hockey team in Canada. Montreal defeated the Ottawa Generals 3-1 to win the trophy. Over time, professional teams would also become eligible to win the trophy.
10. Ungava District becomes part of Quebec.

Answer: 1912

Though the District of Ungava existed from 1895 to 1820, the 1912 Quebec Boundaries Extension Act would largely place it under the control of Quebec. With this law, a large area of northern territory would be added to Quebec. The end of a boundary dispute between Quebec and Newfoundland (over the the border with Labrador) would further readjust the borders of Quebec.
