In 1968 Suharto formally replaced Sukarno as president.
2. 1999, Pervez Musharraf.

Answer: Pakistan

Pakistan's army overthrew the government of Nawar Sharif 1999 after Sharif tried to sack Gen.Musharraf from the top military job. Musharraf declared a state of emergency and assumed all power.
3. 1973, Daud Khan.

Answer: Afghanistan

Monarchy was overthrown in coup by Daud Khan, who himself was assassinated in coup 1978.
4. 1968, Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr.

Answer: Iraq

A coup by the Baath party brought al-Bakr to power 1968. He was replaced by Saddam Hussein 1979.

Gen. Aoun was appointed to head the caretaker military government 1988. Premier Selim el-Hoss set up a rival government. Aoun occupied the presidential palace 1989, rejecting the constitution and election of Elias Hrawi as president. (The former elected president, Rene Mouhawad, was assassinated after 17 days as president).

After coup and civil war, revolutionary council took over the government in South Yemen 1986. The autocratic head of state Ali Nasser was dismissed. A new administration was formed under the more moderate Haydar Abu Bakr al-Attas.

Military coup by Gen.Ershad 1982. He became president 1983 and announced his resignation 1990.

Thailand became a puppet ally of Japan under Field Marshal Phibun Songkhram 1941. Phibun regained power in military coup 1947, but he was ousted in another coup 1957. Military dictatorship continued under Gen. Sarit Thanarat (1957-63) and Gen. Thanom Kittikachorn (1963-73).

Gen. Ne Win reassumed power after military coup 1962. He had administrated an emergency goverment 1960-62.

Gen. Yuan Shih-Kai became dictator after the fall of the 'infant Emperor', Pu-Yi, in 1912.

Japan invaded Manchuria 1931 and set up a puppet state called Manchukuo. From 1934 this state was led by puppet Manchu Emperor Kang Te as nominal ruler.

President Marcos became dictator-president 1965. He declared martial law and ended the freedom of the press 1972. He was overthrown and exiled 1986.
