Thomas Jefferson bought the land from Napoleon Bonaparte, leader of France, for fear that Napoleon might want to expand his empire in North America.
2. Which is NOT invented during the Industrial Revolution?

Answer: The gun

Eli Whitney with his invention of the cotton gin managed to produce 50 pounds of cotton a day, therefore making cotton a profitable crop. The steamship was invented by Jouffroy d'Abbans (but there are other contenders, too) and Samuel F. B. Morse invented the telegraph.
3. What relationship did the 2nd president, John Adams, have with the 6th president, John Quincy Adams?

Answer: Father and son

Jackson came into office disliking the Second Bank of the United States (BUS). To keep the BUS, Congress had to recharter it by passing a bill. When the bill had passed through Congress and went to the president, he vetoed it.

Answer: 1840

The Amistad Case involved thirty-six African men. They had mutinied on a ship, the 'Amistad'. They were charged with piracy and murder. Their lawyer was the former president of the U.S., none other than John Quincy Adams.
7. What did the Indian named Sequoya invent?

Answer: The Cherokee Syllabary

The Cherokee Syllabary was a set of written symbols, each representing a syllable, used to write a language.
8. Who was the vice-president of James Buchanan, who, later went on to be a Confederate general in the Civil War?

Answer: John Breckinridge

Breckenridge also ran for president in the 1860 election. He didn't win against Abraham Lincoln, though.
9. On July 4, 1826 which two presidents died?

Answer: Jefferson and Adams

By an extraordinary coincidence, the second and third presidents died on Independence Day, 1826.
10. What politician was called "The Little Giant"?

Answer: Stephen Douglas

He beat Lincoln in the senatorial election in Illinois. Lincoln later beat him in the 1860 presidential election. Douglas was a Democrat.
