Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these Japanese carriers was NOT involved at all in the Battle of Midway?

Answer: Chiyoda

The IJN Hosho served as a base for scout and observer planes. The IJN Junyo was part of the Aleutians Diversion Attack under Vice Admiral Kondo, and the Zuiho was part of Admiral Yamamaoto's main body. Chiyoda was not an aircraft carrier at the time of the battle. (It was later converted).
2. The Captain of the IJN Soryu was last seen performing what action?

Answer: Singing "Kimigayo"

Captain Yanagimoto was witnessed singing the Japanese National Anthem by a sailor sent to rescue him, but the latter was immediately ordered off the ship when he stepped into the bridge.
3. While the Aleutian Islands Diversion was a success, which of the following key pieces of intelligence was recovered by the Americans?

Answer: A intact mitsubishi "zero" fighter plane

The Japanese pilot had tried to land but the flat piece of ground he chose to land on turned out to be the exact opposite. He broke his neck on impact, but his plane was found intact.
4. Which of these pilots flew two missions, one of which he knew was suicidal, during the battle?

Answer: Joichi Tomanaga

Tomanaga led the First Japanese air raid on Midway Island, in which one of his fuel tanks was shot full of holes. His second mission was the last Japanese air strike of the battle and the fatal attack that resulted in the order to abandon the USS Yorktown.
5. The Battle of Midway occurred before which of these events?

Answer: The Battle of El Alamein

The Battle of El Alamein begun shortly after the events at Midway. The Hundred Regiments Offensive took place before the United States' entry into the war; it was fought between the Chinese Communist "eight route" army and the Japanese. As suggested by the name, the Chinese had a force consisting of around 100 regiments.
6. The USS Yorktown was finally sunk by which of the following?

Answer: Torpedoes from Japanese Submarine I-168

While most Japanese forces were ordered to retreat, a number of submarines stayed in position and bombarded the island for some time in preparation for a eventually cancelled Japanese counterattack. One of them, the I-168, was able to come across the Yorktown.
7. Who was the captain of IJN Hiryu?

Answer: Tomeo Kaku

While Yamaguchi was the highest ranking officer aboard the Hiryu, Kaku was the ship's actual captain. He was the only one that stayed with Yamaguchi aboard the Hiryu. Interesting enough, the officers listed as the other two answers died within hours of Kaku and Yamaguchi.(They were the captains of the Kaga and Soryu).
8. How was the Kaga sunk?

Answer: A torpedo from the IJN Hagikaze

While she was disabled by the dive bombers from Enterprise, the Kaga was deemed salvageable, but hopes were later abandoned. The destroyer IJN Hagikaze then fired two torpedoes at the doomed hulk, sinking it.
9. How many Japanese "Zeroes" were in the air at the time of McClusky's attack?

Answer: 18

There had been 9 earlier when the carriers had been attacked by Avenger Torpedo Bombers. The other 9 had been in reserve but were launched and ordered to strafe the any survivors or plane wreckage in the sea. They had been too busy strafing survivors to notice the dive bombers until it was too late.
10. You've made it this far. Now here's a fun one: In the John Birmingham's series "The Axis of Time", What was the name of the 21st century ship captured by the Axis Powers during the Battle of Midway?

Answer: Sutanto

In the novel "Weapons of Choice" a Japanese officer is in for a shock while questioning a Indonesian prisoner from the Sutanto, asking about historical events that haven't happened yet.
