Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Maybelline introduced a lip gloss in the 1980s that teen girls eagerly slathered on their lips. It came in little glass bottles with flavors such as mint, strawberry, and orange. What was this lip gloss called?

Answer: Kissing Potion

What made this product different was that it was a roll-on gloss. If you look at old ads for Kissing Potion you'll see actress Kim Basinger, a former model, rolling Kissing Potion on her lips.
2. From 1977 through 1985 a catchy commercial jingle popularized the soft drink Dr Pepper. Think back to those advertisements. I was one, you were one and everybody was one. We were all a what?

Answer: Pepper

Who can forget actor David Naughton, dressed in a white shirt and vest, suddenly breaking out in song and leading a queue of people down the street singing "I'm a Pepper, he's a Pepper, she's a Pepper, we're a Pepper. Wouldn't you like to be a Pepper, too?"
3. In the 1970s and 1980s a shampoo sat on store shelves with a name that was actually an entire sentence. What was it called?

Answer: Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific

Manufactured by the Andrew Jergens Company, the shampoo came in a bright pink bottle with colored letters. The smell was a mixture of floral and spice. It is no longer on store shelves but can be ordered from the Vermont Country Store.
4. Think back to the days before take-out or home-delivered pizza. A certain pizza parlor was a family favorite. Add some waiters with straw hats and striped shirts. Shake it all up and you get the name of what establishment?

Answer: Shakey's Pizza

Shakey's was founded in 1954 in Sacramento, California. With a piano player plunking out ragtime music and long wooden tables at which families could enjoy conversation and pizza, Shakey's Pizza was a family favorite. "You'll have fun at Shakey's" because it's still around. Nowadays there are only about sixty of the pizza parlors left.
5. The McDonald's fast food chain has been around since the 1940s. Over the years it has introduced a variety of products, some that have succeeded, some that have not. One hamburger that did not last long was introduced in 1987 with the slogan "keep the hot side hot and the cool side cool." What was it called?

Answer: McDLT

The idea was to separate the hot meat from the cool parts, in other words the lettuce(L) and the tomatoes(T). Apparently consumers didn't care if their hot and cold food touched because the last McDLT was served in 1990.
6. Small children and fashion sense seems like an oxymoron. However, back in 1972, a children's clothing line introduced separate wear with different animals printed on shirts and pants. Kids could choose their own clothing for the day based upon matching the animal prints. A clever idea, right? What was this clothing line called?

Answer: Garanimals

Garan Incorporated came up with the idea for the animal pairing by placing different animal characters on the hang tags of each piece of clothing. The idea of children matching the hang tags by themselves was a good one until kids started to experiment with the different patterns. Pairing a monkey with an elephant didn't work on clothes any more than it did in the real animal world.

In 2008 Walmart brought back Garanimals, this time with more contemporary colors and prints.
7. Remember this piece of bedroom furniture that was very popular in the 1970s and 1980s? Everyone seemed to have one and didn't mind showing it off. It consisted of two types: hard-sided and soft-sided. What was it called?

Answer: waterbed

Waterbeds were all the rage decades ago. The mattress was originally intended to be used therapeutically since it could be heated. The advantages of owning one were outweighed by the disadvantages. Waterbeds sprang leaks. They were also very heavy and hard to move. They're still around but harder to find.
8. Made only from 1970 to 1973, these little dolls tried to give Barbie a run for her money. They were about half the size of Barbie but had the flexibility to bend and fit easily into a little girl's purse. What was this doll's name?

Answer: Dawn

Dressed in mini-skirts and go-go boots, Dawn was cute and stylish. Her neck, hips, waist and knees were jointed so she could pose. Unfortunately the Topper Corporation, who made the original doll, went bankrupt in 1973. The Dawn doll reappeared in the late 1990s but disappeared for good in 2003.
9. Pepsi introduced a cola drink in 1975 that was infused with lemon. With half the calories of its regular counterpart, what was it called?

Answer: Pepsi Light

Pepsi Light was sold from 1975 to 1986. In 2000 and 2001 Pepsi introduced two lemon colas, Pepsi Twist and Diet Pepsi Twist which, sadly, disappeared in 2006. Diet Pepsi Lemon was later introduced for a limited time. What's up with Pepsi and lemons anyway?
10. Before Nutella there was this product. Popular in the 1970s, it was a flavored peanut butter spread sold by Kraft. Do you recall the name of this sweet treat?

Answer: Koogle

Koogle came in flavors such as chocolate, banana, vanilla, and cinnamon. The logo on the jar had a pair of jiggling eyes. Kids loved "Koo-Koo-Koogle with the Koo-Koo-Koogly eyes."
