Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 28 June 1914 - Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. Where did this take place?

Answer: Sarajevo

Franz Ferdinand married Sophie Chotek von Chorkora. As she was only a lady-in-waiting he was permitted to marry her on condition that their children could not succeed to the throne and she was not allowed to accompany him in the imperal carriage or the imperial box.
She was with him on a visit to Sarajevo when they were both shot, dying later from their wounds.
2. 4 August 1914 - Britain declared war on Germany. Who was on the British throne at the time?

Answer: King George V

George V, a grandson of Queen Victoria, reigned from 1910 till his death in 1936. During the First World War he changed the family name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor. He visited the Western Front on several occasions.
3. 19 January 1915 - The first Zeppelin raid on Britain occurred. What was a Zeppelin?

Answer: Airship

Airships were developed about 1870 by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin. The first flight was in 1900 and they were used as bombers during the First World War.
The largest airship built, Hindenburg, burst into flames and crashed in 1937.
4. 7 May 1915 - The Lusitania was sunk by a German U-boat. What type of ship was Lusitania?

Answer: Passenger liner

Lusitania made her maiden voyage in September 1907 and was called the 'Greyhound of the Atlantic'. She won the Blue Ribbon for the fastest Atlantic crossing. She was sunk by a U-boat off the coast of Ireland and 1,119 of her passengers and crew were lost.

It is sometimes said that the Lusitania was also carrying munitions at the time when she was sunk. Even if this is true, the sinking was a massive blunder for Germany as it did much to swing public opinion in America against Germany.

Answer: Dardanelles

The Gallipoli Peninsula overlooked the Dardanelles Straits between European and Asiatic Turkey.
6. 27 January 1916 - Conscription was introduced in Britain. Who was required to enlist under this Act of Parliament?

Answer: Single men 18-41 years old

7. 1 July 1916 - First day of the Battle of the Somme. What was the Somme?

Answer: River

The Somme is a river in France. It is 152 miles (245 Km) long. It rises near St. Quentin and flows north into the English Channel. Ironically, the name is of Celtic origin and means 'tranquillity'.

Britain suffered 60,000 casualties (dead, wounded and taken prisoner) on the first day of the battle.
8. 7 December 1916 - David Lloyd George became Prime Minister. Who was his predecessor?

Answer: Herbert Henry Asquith

Asquith was born in Yorkshire in 1852 and in 1886 he was elected Liberal MP for East Fife. He became Prime Minister in 1908, succeeding Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman on the latter's death. In 1915 he formed a coalition government with the Conservative party.
9. 11 November 1918 - The Armistice with Germany was signed, followed in 1919 by the peace treaty. Where was this Treaty signed?

Answer: Versailles
