Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This game is usually about avoiding winning tricks and hence penalty cards. Which name fits the bill?

Answer: Hearts

A type of whist, it is all about penalty cards. The normal strategy is to avoid winning tricks with penalty cards in them, namely any of the hearts cards and the queen of spades. The queen of spades is the highest value penalty card and no doubt explains some of the alternative game names such as Black Queen and Chase the Lady.
2. In this game you ask another player to hand over cards to help complete your set of cards (e.g. all the threes), which must then be placed in front of you. The name of the game is also the response given when that other player doesn't hold the demanded card. What is it?

Answer: Go Fish

Up to ten people can play, each receiving five cards. If there are four or fewer players then seven cards are dealt out. The remaining cards form the pool. If told to "Go fish!", then you collect a card from the pool. At the end of the game, the person with the most sets of cards placed in front of them wins.
3. This type of card game is usually played by one player only. Called by different names on either side of the Atlantic, the photo points to the North American name. What is the British one?

Answer: Patience

These types of game typically start with laying out a pack of cards in a particular format and then manipulating them according to a set of rules. Klondike is one of the better known versions of this game. Indeed Klondike is often regarded as synonymous with Patience/Solitaire.

The photo shows a solitaire ring.
4. A casino gambling card game, this type of game gave rise to a phrase meaning 'blank expression'. What's the name of the game?

Answer: Poker

There are a number of games that are classified as poker games. These include games such as Texas Hold'em and Seven Card Stud. Your betting strategy is one of the key factors determining whether you win or lose money.

The 'blank expression' is known as a 'poker face'. The photo shows flowers of the genus Kniphofia, sometimes called red hot poker.
5. Key elements of this team game include a bidding process and Whist-type form of game play where the top bidder attempts to reach an agreed number of tricks. What's the name of the game?

Answer: Bridge

Bridge has its roots in Russian Whist (Biritch). The name is the Anglicised form of Biritch. The photo shows a tenancy agreement, a form of contract and a reference to Contract Bridge, the dominant form of the game today.
6. A simple enough game, one pack of cards will suffice although more can be used. You make progress by being faster than your opponent to notice pairings of cards as they are played onto a central pile. First one to get rid of their pile wins. Wins at what?

Answer: Snap

Speed is of the essence in this game. Playable with a standard pack or custom-made one, penalties for falsely calling "Snap" can make it more interesting. As well as calling out, you normally have to be first to place your hand on the central pile.
7. With the aim of winning all the cards, the players don't get to look at their cards before playing them. Each 'battle' is won by the higher value card. What's the game?

Answer: War

If players reveal the same value of card, you have 'war'. Each player places another one card (or three, in some versions) face down before trying again. This winner of that 'war' gets the pile and the players start battling again. The photo shows a remembrance poppy, used to commemorate soldiers who have died in conflicts since the First World War.
8. In this game you get rid of your cards by melding, laying off (adding to existing melds on the table) and discarding. One pack of cards is involved and you start your turn by picking up a card. At the end of each hand, the points held in the hands of the loser(s) are added to the winner's cumulative score. A key ingredient in the cocktail shown in the photo is loosely connected to the name of the game. What is the game?

Answer: Rummy

Thought ultimately to have Chinese ancestry, there are around 50 games in eight groups which are rummy-type games. The connection between the photo and the game is rum, which forms part of the piņa colada cocktail shown.
9. The basic game is as follows: the pack (having an odd number of cards) is dealt out and each player discards any pairs. Players then take turns to pick a card from the person on the right, discarding any more pairs created. The aim is to avoid holding the last card but what is the name of the game?

Answer: Old Maid

An old Victorian game, the European versions mostly translate as 'Black Peter'. The photo shows a donkey, which is the name of a commercial version of the game with farmyard animals on the cards. It is however easy enough to play with a standard pack of cards with a joker added or a card (such as the ace or queen of clubs) removed to create an odd number.
10. Which social card game is often played by two pairs or three players using a reduced pack of cards (typically 43 cards including a joker, for four players) where the number of tricks to be won and the trump are set in a bidding round?

Answer: 500

The card game 500 is based on Euchre and borrows some ideas from Bridge. The cards are dealt, bidding follows and the gameplay focuses on the winning of tricks. Points are awarded on completion of each round. Games with two, three, five and six players use different numbers of cards.

The letter D in the photo is the Latin equivalent of the number 500.
