Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You are playing a game of "Stratego" and one of your opponent's bombs has just destroyed one of highest ranked pieces. What piece can you use to defuse that bomb?

Answer: Sapper (aka Miner)

The Sapper is also called "The Miner". Each player has five sappers.
The Spy is also a special piece, since it can defeat the Marshal, the highest ranked piece in "Stratego".
The Scout's special ability is the fact that he can move at any distance in a line.
2. Your best friend has invited you to play a game of "Backgammon". He is going to fetch the board and you the pieces. Which of the following names does NOT apply to "Backgammon" pieces?

Answer: Marbles

The objective of the player in "Backgammon" is to remove your pieces from the board after placing them in your home. In the early 1980s, in the State of Oregon, the game was almost prohibited from being played in public, because it was considered a game of chance and thus gambling, which is outlawed in Oregon.

The defendant proved that "Backgammon' is not a game of chance, like poker, but a game of skill, since each player has everything they need to win. The accused man, an organizer of "Backgammon" tournaments, was acquitted.
3. While you are enjoying yourself in a bar, another friend of yours appears and requests you play a game of "Battleship" with him. You agree and, with your first attempt, you manage to hit his submarine! What is the total number of hits required to sink a submarine in the classic version of the rules of "Battleship"?

Answer: Three

In the standard version of the game, the following types of ships are presented: Aircraft carrier, Battleship, Submarine, Destroyer and Patrol boat. The Aircraft carrier requires five hits to be sunk, the Battleship four, the Submarine and the Destroyer three and the Patrol boat two.

In some versions, the Destroyer is called Cruiser, while in others, the term Cruiser applies to the Patrol boat.
4. Your luck continues. This time, you are playing chess. You are close to winning the game, but to checkmate your opponent's king you need to move one of your bishops accordingly. How does the bishop move in chess?

Answer: Any number of squares in a diagonal fashion

Each player has two bishops. One is seated between the king and the king's knight and the other between the queen and the queen's knight. Using the Algebraic Chess Notation, the white bishops are seated in the C1 and F1 blocks, while the black ones in the C8 and F8 blocks.
5. While preparing yourself to play the "Game of the Generals" with another friend, you spot a piece that has a rank not included in the hierarchy of the "Game of the Generals". Which of the following ranks does NOT appear in the hierarchy of the ranks in the "Game of the Generals"?

Answer: Corporal

The ranks in the "Game of the Generals" start with Five-Star General and end with the Flag, whose capture brings the game to an end. Each piece can eliminate another of lower rank, except the spy, who eliminates piece except the private. All the insignias used in the "Game of the Generals" come from the Army of the Philippines.
6. Oh, no! While playing "Ghosts" you captured one of your opponent's evil ones. How did you know it was evil and not good?

Answer: It has a red dot in its back

In "Ghosts", each player is given four good and four evil ghosts. The evil ghosts bear a red dot in the back and the good ones a blue dot. Facing the front of your opponent's ghost, you don't know if it is good or evil. A player wins if he captures all the good ghosts of his opponent or when his opponent has captured all his evil ghosts.
7. Your best friend has returned from China and bought, as a souvenir, an edition of the game "Go". Knowing you are a huge fan of board games, he invites you to play a game. Before you start, he explains you the terminology of the game. How did he tell you the empty intersections between the game pieces are called?

Answer: Points

The earliest evidence of the existence of "Go" dates to the Zhou dynasty in China, that ruled between 1046 and 256 BC. The player's objective is to arrange his pieces (called stones) that way so that they cover a larger territory of the board than their opponent's. Also, a game can be won if the opponent resigns.
8. Browsing through your collection of board games, you remember that you have the 1930s editions of the game "Camelot", which was the very first board game you learned to play, because of its relative simplicity. You remember that, in the 1980s, it was republished again by the same company that had first released it, back in the 1930s, but under a different name. Which one?

Answer: Inside Moves

"Camelot" is played in a 12 x 14 board. Three squares are removed from each of the four corners of the board and, in both ends, two extra squares form each player's "castle". The pieces each player has are four knights and ten men. To win, the player must capture the opponent's castle or all of his pieces while retaining two pieces in both occasions.
9. In your recent plays, you faced several reverses. Now you are going to counter them, this time playing "Reversi". With what other name is that game known?

Answer: Othello

In "Reversi", there 64 discs, bearing a light color on one side and a dark on the other. When a player moves one of their discs, their assigned color is displayed on the disc. If a disc is bounded by two of the opponent's discs, it is turned over to the opponent's color. A player wins with having the majority of discs turned to their color when the playable squares are filled.
10. You feel well because you have countered your late defeats, but your persistent opponent invites for a game of "Agon". You accept, confident you will be the one who will place his queen at the throne and surround her with your guards. By the way, how many guards does a player have in "Agon"?

Answer: Six

The game of "Agon" is played on a hexagonal board. Each player has one queen, hexagonal in shape and six guards, which are circular. The one who places their queen at the throne (which is the central hex) and surrounds her with their guards wins. If a piece is bounded by two of the opponent's pieces, it is captured. If it's a guard, the player to whom it belongs places it to any vacant cell in the outer ring of the board, while if it is a queen, the player moves her to any of the cells.
