Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the acronym DSLR stand for?

Answer: Digital Single-Lens Reflex

Digital Single-Lens Reflex cameras are a newer version of Single-Lens Reflex cameras. Instead of film, they use a sensor, digital processor, and a memory card to store images.
2. You've just received your first camera, a brand new DSLR, as a gift and you're very excited. What would be the best way to learn how to use your new camera?

Answer: Read the manual thoroughly.

Every DSLR model is different, so the best thing to do is read the manual on your specific camera. This will allow you to understand not only the basic functions, but also be aware of some of the smaller features that often come in handy.
3. You've had your camera for a few months and have figured out most of the basic functions. You've received a few compliments on the photos you've taken from your friends and family, but you really want to turn your hobby into a career. Which option would NOT be a great way to do this?

Answer: Put an online ad on your local Craig's List for $50 portrait sessions.

Many new camera owners make the mistake of thinking that they are already professionals, despite having no experience in the field of photography.
4. You are taking photos inside your house at night, but they keep turning out very yellow. What would be the best way to fix this and still get good quality exposures?

Answer: Adjust your white balance.

Most homes have indoor lighting. The bulbs used in most households tend to emit warmer (or yellow-ish) tones, thus effecting your photos. Adjusting the white balance setting on your camera to compensate for this is an easy and effective way to deal with this problem.
5. You are strolling along and you see a beautiful flowering bush with bees and butterflies. You want to get a close-up of one flower with a bee gathering nectar. Which lens would be best suited for this situation?

Answer: Macro lens.

Macro lenses let you get super close up to near-by subjects to capture amazing levels of detail. Telephoto lenses are great for capturing subjects that are far away. Fish eye lenses are good for extremely wide angle photos, such as capturing a panoramic view. Microscopic lenses aren't used on consumer cameras.
6. You are in the middle of a photo shoot and your memory card is almost full, but you aren't done yet. What would you NOT want to do?

Answer: Delete the bad photos directly from your camera to free up space.

Deleting photos directly from your camera is a bad habit. If something happens during deletion (e.g. a loss of power), your card could be left unreadable. You should always upload your images (even the bad ones) to your computer and then use the Format function clear the card.
7. You've officially mastered the basics and you want to start adding a more creative flair to your photos. Given a limited budget and no experience, which processing software would be a good option?

Answer: Photoshop Elements

Photoshop CC is an amazing tool when it comes to photo processing and digital art, but it is only available in a subscription based model called the Creative Cloud and quite difficult to master. Photoshop Elements is a simpler version tailored for beginners. IrfanView is mostly an image organizer and has only limited editing functionality and Microsoft Paint is just an extremely basic bitmap editor suitable only for the crudest of modifications.
8. You are taking photos at your friend's baseball game, but all the photos are blurry. What should you do to get clearer results?

Answer: Increase your shutter speed.

When photographing action, such as in a sporting event, increasing your shutter speed will allow you to effectively freeze your subject and get clear photos. A tripod would likely not help you much - the blur is primarily caused by the motion of the players, not shaking of your camera.
9. What scale is used when measuring the color temperature of light?

Answer: Kelvin.

Using the Kelvin scale helps photographers adjust their white balance to ensure pleasing color tones. Fahrenheit and Celsius scales are primarily used for measuring temperature. Rankine is a temperature scale used only by certain engineering fields.
10. Fill in the blank: _____________ will make you a better photographer.

Answer: Time and practice

Fauxtographers often get caught up on the equipment, software, or even locations/subjects. But, time and practice is the best way to improve your work.
