Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start the quiz by breaking bread: the delicious cornbread originates from what set of indigenous communities?

Answer: Native Americans

Many of the different Native American communities produced types of cornbread, including the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee and Muscogee groups. It is now consumed by many people in the southern states of the U.S.

I have yet to find a bread I don't enjoy, but cornbread is a favorite of mine. Cornbread is mainly fiber - which helps regulate bowl movements and lower cholesterol.
2. The marinara pizza, a Neapolitan style, is rarely seen in my home country of the United Kingdom. It reminds me of a great holiday I had in Italy. It is unconventional in lacking which of these ingredients?

Answer: Cheese

What the marinara lacks in cheese, it makes up for with garlic. Tomato sauce, olive oil, oregano and garlic are the normal toppings on the dough base of a marinara. I have also had one with basil, in Rome.

Garlic is good for your blood pressure and cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart attacks. It is surprisingly high in vitamins, and has very few calories.
3. This Thai hot sauce was regularly paired by me and my friends during university with potato waffles, but it is perhaps more traditionally eaten with seafood, omelettes, noodles or spring rolls. What is its correct spelling?

Answer: Sriracha

Sriracha consists of chilis, garlic, salt, sugar and vinegar. I've found it to pair well with waffles, chips, burgers and all sorts. In the world of hot sauces, it is not that hot, but to my taste buds it is plenty hot enough.

Though sriracha contains a lot of sodium, and is not the healthiest of foods, chili peppers (and all the spicy foods and sauces that contain them) are thought to help boost your immune system, and have lots of other benefits.
4. My mouth waters as I type the phrase "potato burger," in reference to the best burger I have ever had. My particular burger had vegetables including what member of the sunflower family - called "Lactuca sativa" in Latin?

Answer: Lettuce

I have only ever had one potato burger, in the evening before watching some of my friends perform in a boy band to a big audience, and my low expectations (of the burger!) could not have been more wrongheaded. It was the best burger of my life.

That lettuce is part of the same plant family (Asteraceae) as the sunflower is very unintuitive. The family is also called the "daisy family", based on the Old English etymology meaning "day's eye", not because it contains the daisy.
5. One of my earliest memories is tasting what staple food in northern Africa, made of steamed semolina?

Answer: Couscous

One of the first things I remember is tasting a mouthful of couscous aged five or six, when our teacher brought in African foods for us to try as part of our studying of Africa. It tasted quite good! I have had it many times since in tagine, a vegetable-based stew named after the type of pot it is made in.

Couscous contains lots of selenium, an antioxidant, and it is a good source of protein.
6. A simple okra curry recipe - containing okra, onions, chopped tomatoes and seasoning - reminds me of a comrade of mine. What type of food is okra, in this dish?

Answer: Vegetable

Okra is a green vegetable with no strong taste, but it is good at absorbing flavor. Okra curry paired with parathas - an Indian flatbread - has never failed to substantially improve my day.

Okra is unusual for a vegetable in containing protein, and it has lots of vitamins such as C and K, without having many calories.
7. Kidney beans, red lentils and peas can all form the basis of excellent soups, but when dried and split, they are known as "pulses" and can form the basis of which type of food?

Answer: Daal

There are many different types of daals that make great rice meals. And soup can seemingly be made from almost anything, but the three given pulses are excellent choices. The recipe I know for red lentil soup produces something closer to a stew - a warm, filling, hearty meal that goes well with the cornbread of question one, and is up there with my favorite meals.
8. A food stand where I used to live offered a delicious falafel and sweet potato wrap, which I would have as a treat once a week. What part of the world were the workers, and falafel itself, from?

Answer: Middle East

The food stand was Lebanese specifically, but falafel is a popular street food all around the Middle East - and, more recently, worldwide. It can be made with chickpeas or beans and goes well with any number of flatbreads, vegetables and sauces.

Falafel can be filling, with lots of fiber and protein, and a slow release of energy that will keep you from being hungry throughout the day.
9. The chili of my choosing contains onions, peppers, carrots, black beans, chopped tomatoes and garlic. However, some foodies would argue that this is not a chili, due to the inclusion of which ingredient?

Answer: Black beans

Preferred chilis differ so much that any of these ingredients could be a cause for concern to some, but the most common dealbreaker is that inclusion of any sort of beans makes it (perhaps) not a chili. Tomatoes is the next most common dealbreaker. However, both are common in modern dishes called "chilis", whether or not they were part of the original dish from North America.

Whatever the foodstuff I make is, it is delicious, filling and healthy, counting for a fair few of my five-a-day.
10. And finally: dessert. In the U.K., if I refer to "bourbons", I am not referring to units of whiskey, but to what foodstuff (itself a term that means something different in the U.S.)?

Answer: Biscuit

In the U.S., a biscuit might be called a "cookie"; it is a hard, baked product. Biscuits soften over time, in contrast to cakes, which harden. A bourbon consists of two chocolate-flavored biscuits and, between them, a chocolate buttercream layer.

Though obviously not healthy, biscuits and other treats still - in moderation - have a place in a healthy lifestyle. Chocolate causes more endorphins to be released in your brain, which feels pleasant. Eating foods that are tasty as well as just healthily is good for your mental health, whether it's something to look forward to at the end of a hard day, or as a celebration for a special occasion.
