Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This small pale orange-coloured berry is a favourite in Scandinavian countries, especially in Finland where they make the alcoholic beverage, Lakka. What is it?

Answer: Cloudberry

The cloudberry is native to the cold regions of the northern hemisphere, especially the Scandinavian countries and Canada. The very hardy plants grow fruit in temperatures as cold as -40C. The Nordic liqueur Lakka, or Lakkalikoori, is made by soaking cloudberry fruit in alcohol for up to six months.

The Quebec region of Canada also have their own take on the liqueur drink they call Chicoutai.
2. The red lingonberry is known by what alternative bovine sounding name?

Answer: Cowberry

The cowberry, or red lingonberry, resembles the cranberry with its small red fruit, but they differ in that they have white and not pink flowers. They are cultivated in bulk in the Netherlands, and elsewhere these wild berries are hand-picked to make home-made jam, tea and yoghurt.

In Sweden, a Christmas desert called lingonparon is made by boiling pears in concentrated lingonberry juice, with cinnamon and clove, and then sugar added to sweeten as the berries are quite tart.
3. The white flowers from Sambucus nigra are harvested to make a fragrant cordial. Which berry nice plant am I describing?

Answer: Elderberry

Elderflower cordial is believed to have been drunk by the Romans, and since then has been a popular beverage throughout most of Europe. The scented flowers are steeped in boiling water with sugar, citric acid and lemon added. The refreshing drink is best served during hot summer days mixed with chilled sparkling water and a slice of lemon or sprig of mint.
4. Which edible fruit is a hybrid cross between a gooseberry and a blackcurrant?

Answer: Jostaberry

The jostaberry resembles a very large blackcurrant. The thornless plants are very large so a lot of garden space is needed but they are resistant to mildew and leaf spot. They were first cross-bred at an institute in Cologne, Germany, in 1977. It is a little known fruit, but when ripe can be picked and made into pies, crumbles, ice cream, jam and wine.
5. Which of these fruits harvested from palm trees native to Trinidad have been labelled a super-food?

Answer: Acai berry

The fruit (drupe) grows abundantly on the pendulous branches of the acai palm which is native to Trinidad and parts of South America. It has been labelled a super-food as it contains powerful antioxidants. Some have even claimed the small fruit will aid in weight loss and reduce risk of cancer, but there have been no scientific results to confirm this. Because the fruit is highly perishable, they are usually dried, made into juice, or sold as supplements.
6. The wolf berry, sometimes called the goji berry, is native to which continent?

Answer: Asia

Wolf berry, or goji berry, is from the same family as the tomato, potato and tobacco. Native to China, the bright orange-red coloured fruit are grown on plantations and sold commercially throughout the world. They normally need to be cooked before eating but can be eaten raw, Powdered or dried goji fruit can be added to savoury and sweet dishes, made into herbal teas, or added to trail mixes.

Answer: Sea buckthorn

The Latin name for sea buckthorn is Hippophae, or translated as "glittering horse" into English. According to Greek legend, the flying horse Pegasus enjoyed eating the leaves and berries as it gave him additional flying strength. The berries grow densely on prickly bushes and commercial growers often use a berry-shaker to harvest the fruit.

The fruit is used in traditional medicine, cosmetic products, or consumed in tea, jams and pies.
8. Groseille a maquereau (French), stachelbeere (German) and uva spina (Italian) can all be translated in English into which type of fruit?

Answer: Gooseberry

Gooseberry fool, gooseberry pie and gooseberry crumble are just some of the yummy deserts you can make using this small green fruit. Gooseberry jam in a sandwich is also a favourite. These berries are the size of a grape, but have a slightly firmer texture which is why they need gently poaching in water before they are eaten.
9. The berries on this bush are edible to humans, but it is the leaves which are cultivated as the main food for the silkworm in sericulture. What plant is it?

Answer: White mulberry

White mulberry is a small fruit that grow on branches of a medium sized mulberry tree. The ripe fruit is fit for human consumption either in cakes, preserves or wine. The only vegetation that the silkworm eats is the leaf of the white mulberry, and therefore trees are mainly cultivated in South-east Asia where the production of silk, or sericulture, is prevalent. An alternative name for the white mulberry is silkworm mulberry.
10. What is the missing word to this Robert Frost poem? "You ought to have seen what I saw on my way To the village, through Mortenson's pasture today ________________ as big as the end of your thumb, Real sky-blue, and heavy, and ready to drum".
