Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cultivated mainly in Southeast Asia, and graded A, B, and C to determine price and export

Answer: Durian

Durians are grown in Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand. While the fruit is quite sweet, its most distinct feature is its awful smell which is sometimes described as rotten cheese.

Grade A are the most expensive and are usually for export. The durians are nicely round with at least 5 fertile compartments (sections with fresh). The durians typically weigh between 1.5 kg to 3 kg. High flesh-to-husk ratio, often around 20-25%.

Grade B are often called "small cats" (Xiao Mao) for varieties like Musang King. They are irregular or slightly curved with roughly 3-4 compartments. Often weigh under 1 kg.

Grade C rarely reach high-end retail markets due to visual defects, small size, or minor animal bites/worm infestations. They are often made into pastes, puffs or cakes.
2. Often described as a cross between a kiwi and a pear

Answer: Dragon fruit

Dragon fruit is known for its striking pink or yellow skin and speckled white or red flesh. The fruits are native to Southern Mexico and Central America, but are now grown worldwide. Their name comes from their exotic scaly look. The dragon fruit tastes like a cross between kiwi and pears, and they are often eaten by cutting them in half and eating the pulp out of the tough skin. Dragon fruit can also be peeled and cut into chunks to be eaten in salads, with yogurt, or as they are.
3. "Hairy" fruit gets its name the Malay word

Answer: Rambutan

Rambutan gets its name from the Malay word "rambut", which means "hair". The fruit tastes like lychee, but slightly less floral and more acidic.

The translucent flesh is a single brown seed; in some varieties, the flesh is "clingstone" (sticks to the seed), while premium "freesstone" varieties peel away easily.

To get the right taste, the skin of the fruit must be bright red or yellow. If the "hairs" are black and shriveled, the fruit is likely overripe and losing its juiciness. They are very high in vitamin C and copper.
4. "Queen of fruits" with a thick purple rind and sweet, white segmented flesh

Answer: Mangosteen

Mangosteen is a tropical evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia, specifically the Malay Peninsula and Borneo. The "Queen of Fruits" is known for its exquisite flavour and unique appearance.

The fruit is about the size of a small apple or tangerine. It has a thick, leathery, deep purple or burgundy rind (exocarp) that is bitter and inedible. There are four to eight snowy-white, juicy segments arranged like a peeled mandarin inside the rind. These segments have a soft, custard-like texture. A small, flower-shaped pattern on the bottom of the fruit indicates exactly how many segments are inside.
5. Related to jackfruit, native to the Philippines and New Guinea

Answer: Breadfruit

Breadfruit is related to the jackfruit, and is native to the Philippines and New Guinea where it is often roasted, baked, fried, or boiled. When cooked the taste is said to be similar to freshly baked bread which is the origin of its name.
6. Asian fruit with a white pulp and hard shell

Answer: Duku

Duku is an Asian fruit with a white pulp and hard shell, which tastes like grapes. They are high fiber fruits which give them a variety of well-known health benefits.
7. Known for its intense, sweet-tart flavour and aromatic pulp

Answer: Passion fruit

There are over 500 varieties, of which there are two primary types: purple and yellow passion fruits.

The purple is smaller (roughly the size of a lemon) with a dark purple exterior. It is generally sweeter and more aromatic, making it the preferred choice for eating fresh.

The yellow is larger with a bright yellow skin, with a more acidic and tart taste, often used for industrial juice production due to its higher juice yield.

Other notable types are: Sweet Granadilla, orange-skinned and much sweeter than typical passion fruit. Giant Granadilla, the largest variety, which can grow up to 25cm long and weigh up to 3.5kg. Banana Passion Fruit, the elongated fruit with a flavour reminiscent of banana and pineapple
8. Cross between a sweet orange and pomelo, originated in Barbados

Answer: Grapefruit

The grapefruit is a relatively recent discovery, likely originated in 18th century Barbados, and are believed to be a cross between an orange and a pomelo. The name comes from how they grow in clusters like grapes.

The common varieties are: red grapefruit, known for being the sweetest, pink grapefruit which offers a balanced sweet-tart profiles, white/yellow grapefruit, the most tart and acidic, and melogold, a larger, exceptionally sweet hybrid between a pomelo and a white grapefruit, often described as having a "honey" flavour.
9. Muskmelon known for its sweet, floral aroma and firm, orange flesh

Answer: Cantaloupe

North American cantaloupe is the most common type found in supermarkets in the US and Canada. It is easily identified by its net-like (reticulated) skin and lacks distinct ribs. It has a very sweet, musky scent when ripe.

European cantaloupe is named after the Italian papal village of Cantalupo, this variety has smooth or warty gray-green skin with deep longitudinal grooves (ribs). It is generally more aromatic and has a slightly more complex, less sugary flavour than the American cantaloupe.
10. Southeast Asian fruit known for its intensely sweet, honey-like flavour and strong fragrance

Answer: Cempedak

Cempedak is a tropical fruit belonging to the same family as jackfruit and breadfruit. It has a pungent, musky aroma that some compare to a blend of jackfruit and durian.

The fruit is tubular or oblong, typically growing up to 30 cm long. It features a green to brownish-yellow rind with less pronounced spines compared to the jackfruit. Inside, it contains numerous fleshy bulbs (arils) that are softer, slimier, and more delicate than jackfruit. These bulbs can range in colour from yellow to deep orange when ripe.
