Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These words are all legal at Scrabble, but which one would be most appropriate for "saying good-bye" to four of your vowels?

Answer: ADIEU

AUDIO means sound. OIDIA is the plural of OIDIUM which is a fungus. AOUDAD (and AUDAD) is a type of sheep. ADIEU means goodbye, and it could be useful to remember that to pluralize it you can add either an S or an X.
2. These words all consist of four vowels plus an L. Which one of them might you put on your french fries?

Answer: AIOLI

AIOLI is garlic mayonnaise. AALII is a small Hawaiian tree. Both of the others are shortened terms for the military rank of lieutenant, but only LOOIE can have letters added at the front to make the words BLOOIE and FLOOIE, which are both terms to describe something amiss or awry.
3. There are eight legitimate words for Scrabble that consist of the letter R plus four vowels. Which two of them could be used to describe a weird eagle's nest?

Answer: EERIE AERIE

The most unusual words in this group are the anagram pair AUREI and URAEI, which are the plurals of AUREUS (a roman gold coin) and URAEUS (a serpent figure on an Egyptian headdress).
4. Getting three of a kind at Scrabble isn't as good as it is at Poker. Sometimes you can still score well though. For instance these words all use up three A's. Which one means a loss of muscular co-ordination?

Answer: ATAXIA

An AZALEA is a plant. An ACACIA is a tree. AGAPAE and AGAPAI are variant spellings of the same word which describes the love that God has for mankind.
5. Getting three I's at Scrabble isn't usually a recipe for success, but sometimes your other letters will combine nicely to cook up a seven-letter bingo. All of these words can be played on the Scrabble board, but which one can you eat as well?

Answer: BIRIANI

BIRIANI (also spelled BIRYANI) is a spicy Indian rice dish. Perhaps you shouldn't eat it if you have ILEITIS which is an inflammation of the intestine. RIPIENI and RILIEVI are plurals of RIPIENO and RELIEVO, Italian words that have been adopted into English as musical and projection terms.
6. Some six-letter words are just three letters repeated twice. These words can be very useful to clear a Scrabble rack filled with lots of the same letter. Which one of these words is a loosely fitting dress?

Answer: MUUMUU

A BOOBOO is a mistake. COOCOO means crazy. DOODOO is excrement. You might go coocoo if you made a booboo and got doodoo on your muumuu!
7. An oversupply of the letter E at Scrabble can be a nuisance, but it is much easier to deal with than having too many of any other letter. There are lots of five-letter words with three E's and even a four-letter word. Which combination of words below would mean a free-for-all fight between leaders with swords?

Answer: EMEER EPEE MELEE

It is interesting to note how the English language changes. The term Master of Ceremonies became shortened to the two letters M.C. Because people started to use those two letters in speech we now have the word EMCEE. It can also be used as a verb meaning to act as a Master of Ceremonies, so the words EMCEED and EMCEEING are also good.
8. Medical terms often seem to be loaded with vowels. If you can bring yourself to click one of the answers below then you won't be suffering from this condition which results in a loss of willpower.

Answer: ABOULIA

Patients suffering from ABOULIA (also spelled ABULIA) are unable to act or make decisions independently. ANAEMIA and URAEMIA are both conditions of the blood. EUPNOEA (also spelled EUPNEA) is used to describe normal breathing.
9. Foreign currencies are a rich source of unusual Scrabble words. You may have heard of the Mexican peso and the Japanese yen, but did you know that in Zambia 100 ngwee are equal to 1 kwacha? All of these words are a valid way to play a lot of vowels, but which one of them would be the easiest to use in paying for goods and services in Mauritania?

Answer: OUGUIYA

EUGENIA is an evergreen tree. OUABAIN is a poisonous drug that can be used to stimulate the heart. EPINAOI is the plural of EPINAOS, which is a reception area behind the nave in a church
10. One way of scoring a bonus at Scrabble is to play your seven tiles around another letter to make an eight-letter word. These words have six vowels and only two consonants and can legally be played on the scrabble board, but which one(s) can you also eat?

Answer: EULOGIAE

EULOGIAE is the plural form of EULOGIA meaning holy bread. AUREOLAE is the plural of AUREOLA meaning halo. An EPOPOEIA is an epic poem. Both ABOIDEAU and ABOITEAU are a tide gate used to control the flow of water. Hopefully you haven't played so many vowels that you get that other Scrabble disease - consonantipation.
