Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which historic NHL franchise occupies the traditional Boardwalk spot on the board?

Answer: Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs were one of the four original teams in the NHL, during the inaugural 1917-18 season. In that first season, they were referred to as the Toronto Arenas, which later became the Toronto St. Patricks. When Conn Smythe purchased the team in 1927, he renamed the team the Maple Leafs, and built Maple Leaf Gardens where the Leafs would play until 1999.

In a 2013 Forbes report, the Leafs were estimated at being worth US $1.15 billion, the most in the league. But in the game it only costs $400 of Monopoly money. What a steal!
2. Beside the Boardwalk, what other legendary NHL team occupies the Park Place spot in NHL Monopoly?

Answer: Montreal Canadiens

Along with the Leafs, the Montreal Canadiens were also one of the four founding teams of the National Hockey League. The Ottawa Senators, which folded in 1934 before being reborn in 1992, and the Montreal Wanderers, who folded halfway through that first season when their arena burnt down, were the other inaugural teams. Nicknamed the "Habs", the team set a record with five consecutive Stanley Cups from 1956-60. Some of the greatest players of all-time, such as Maurice Richard, Ken Dryden, Georges Vezina and Toe Blake all spent their entire careers with the "bleu, blanc et rouge".

In 2013, the Canadiens were valued at $775 million, the third highest in the league. And you can have if for only $350.
3. Instead of Chance and Community Chest cards, what titles are assigned to the cards in the game?

Answer: Eastern and Western Conferences

In the game, Eastern Conference (in places traditionally occupied by the Community Chest) cards are yellow and Western Conference (instead of the Chance) cards are orange. Each card instructs players to either pay or win money or advance to specific properties on the game board.
4. Utilities are represented on the board as broadcast networks. Which two networks are featured on the board?

Answer: Sportsnet and CBC

CTV Sportsnet (now Rogers Sportsnet) can be found on the game board replacing the Electric Company, between the New Jersey Devils (St. Charles Place) and Washington Capitals (States Avenue). CBC takes the spot of the Water Works, between the Chicago Blackhawks (Marvin Gardens) and St. Louis Blues (Ventnor Avenue). Both can be purchased for $150, and the rent is four times the amount shown on the dice if a player owns only one. If the player owns both properties, then the rent rises to ten times the roll.
5. On the NHL Monopoly game board, what can be found on the squares traditionally held by the railroads?

Answer: Multiple Teams

Each space is called an "Expansion Class", where the paired teams both entered the league at the same time. The 1992, 1993, 1998, and 2000 expansion classes are used in the game, going counterclockwise from GO. Each class costs $200 to buy, and rent is charged based on how many are owned by the player.
6. Which of these teams cannot be found as part of an Expansion Class?

Answer: Carolina Hurricanes

The Ottawa Senators along with the Tampa Bay Lightning make up the expansion class of 1992, found between the blue and green properties. The Florida Panthers are joined with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (now Anaheim Ducks) are found in the 1993 class, between the yellow and red properties. Between the pink and orange teams is the 1998 class, of the Nashville Predators and Atlanta Thrashers (now Winnipeg Jets).

The final class is the 2000 addition of the Minnesota Wild and Columbus Blue Jackets. The Carolina Hurricanes are a purple property.
7. After I've bought a set of teams, what extras can I buy to up the rent on each team?

Answer: Luxury Boxes and Arenas

In NHL Monopoly, these replace houses and hotels. The price for each individual luxury boxes and arena vary based on the location on the board.
8. Which purple property is listed as the first property on the board?

Answer: San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks are the Mediterranean Avenue of the game. Each team with its own individual square, are listed on the board based on their admittance into the league. As the Sharks entered in 1991, the newest non-Expansion class franchise, they receive the first spot. You can buy the team for $60.
9. Are any specific players named on the board?

Answer: No

While the background picture on the board features a faceoff, names and team logos have been edited out of the picture. No specific players are named on the board, or in the Eastern/Western chance cards.
10. Which of these hockey related objects is NOT a game piece?

Answer: Whistle

Along with the net, puck, and skates you can play the game with a forward, goalie, goalie mask, glove, or Zamboni.
