Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As much as we all loved Bambi, deer meat is a favourite for hunters and others at the table. What is the name of deer meat?

Answer: Venison

Venison is a name derived from the Latin 'venor' which means to hunt or pursue. It entered the English language upon the Norman conquest of England in the 11th century. It at one time meant any game that was hunted such as deer, elk, rabbit, boar, moose and so on. It is now almost exclusively used to acknowledge the meat of various varieties of deer.
2. This is most likely an easy one for you. Cattle are raised almost everywhere in the world, but what do we call the meat we enjoy in its edible form?

Answer: Beef

Beef is an important part of the diet for most of the world but due to religious reasons Hinduism and some Buddists eschew the consumption of the meat. Middle English people used the word 'cou' for cow while the word beef was derived from French boeuf which in turn came from Latin bos.

The Norman conquest brought the word boeuf to England when the conquerers bought and ate the meat, beef, but rarely had anything to do with the animal, cow.
3. Many of us enjoy pig meat in its many forms but overall we have a name that encompasses the bacon, ham and other meat products. What do we call pig meat?

Answer: Pork

Pigs have been kept for their meat since at least 5000 BCE. Due to their omnivorous diet and rooting way, man has found their husbandry easy and their nature beneficial. Pig meat is made into ham roasts, gammon, bacon, pancetta and sausages just to name a few edible forms.

The name pork comes from the French term porc. Again like other meat names it comes from the Norman translation after their conquest of 1066.
4. Sheep give us a variety of products, specifically wool and meat. What is the name of sheep meat that reaches our table?

Answer: Mutton

The meat of sheep is divided into three classifications. A new sheep up to one year old is called lamb both in terms of the meat and the animal, while the meat of a juvenile sheep older than one year is called hogget and an adult sheep's meat is called mutton. The word comes from old French, mouton.
5. Although it isn't popular everywhere, pigeon is a delicacy in some places. The small breast of the bird has a different name from the bird itself. What is that name?

Answer: Squab

Squab is enjoyed in many parts of the world as a delicacy. The US, France, Italy, north Africa and parts of Asia specifically enjoy it. It is said to taste like dark meat chicken. The name squab is most likely of Scandinavian origin from the word 'skvaab', meaning 'loose, fat flesh'.
6. This is mainly an Asian delicacy. The pupae of the silkworm is cooked in various ways and served up on a plate. What do you call this unusual appetizer?

Answer: Ground Cucumber

In India, Korea, China and Vietnam to name a few countries, silkworm pupae are boiled and heavily seasoned and then served as a snack or appetizer. In English this dish is generally known as 'ground cucumber'. The unusual delicacy has even been recommended as food for astronauts on long space flights. The 'Bombyx Mori', or silkworm, in Latin means 'silkworm of the mulberry tree'.
7. This is another meal that is enjoyed more regionally than commonly in the world. Australia is one place it is served. What would the meat of an alpaca be called when it reaches your plate?

Answer: Viande

Alpaca is not exclusively raised for meat production but more for its quality of fleece. However as a meat source it is of extremely high quality. In parts of South America it has been raised for meat and skins for thousands of years. Alpaca and llama meat is a high source of protein and low in fat.

It has the lowest level of cholesterol of all meats and is one of the healthiest meat choices in the world. It is said to have a salty, tender and lean taste with no fatty aftertaste.
8. More noted for its milk and cheese production, goat meat is served up as well as a meal all over the world. What is the name for this meat at your dinner table?

Answer: Chevon

Although in many parts of Asia and in the Caribbean, goat meat is known as mutton, the term in English speaking countries is mainly known as chevon. This comes from the old French term chevre. Young goat meat is known as cabrito or kid. The New York Times cited goat meat as "the most widely consumed meat in the world". Due to it's low cholesterol and fat, goat is slow roasted to preserve it's tenderness.

In Italy and Greece goat meat is often enjoyed as an Easter celebration meal. In Japan it is sliced thin and served raw, while in Mexico and Indo-Caribbean countries it is curried.

It also has many other varieties of preparation choices including stewing, cutlets and braised.
9. This sea food is popular everywhere. Squid is enjoyed worldwide, but what do you call the meat when ordering from a menu?

Answer: Calamari

Calamari is an Italian plural form of calamaro. This derives from the Latin word calamarium which means 'inkpot', referring to the inky fluid that squids secrete. Squid is mainly a dish served in Asia, south Pacific countries and southern Europe and Mediterranean countries.

In North America and other countries it is served in specialty restaurants. It can be served in a variety of ways such as julienned into a salad, grilled and wrapped in lettuce leaves, stewed, stuffed, stir fried and deep fried just to name a few recipes.

It can also be served with or without the ink removed. The ink apparently adds a tangy quality to the taste.
10. Lastly here is a fun question. In Australia a contest was held in 2005 to find a more palatable name for kangaroo meat. Three of these answers were finalists while one was the winner of the naming contest. What was the name they came up with for kangaroo meat?

Answer: Australus

Kangaroo meat, unofficially called australus now for the purpose of marketing to at least 55 countries worldwide has a high protein quality. It also has a low (about 2%) fat content. It has a high concentrate of conjugated linoleic acid which has been attributed to a wide range of health benefits including anti-carcinogenic and anti-diabetes properties. Cuts of the meat include filets, steaks, minced and even 'kanga-bangas' which are kangaroo sausages.

The benefits of the meat and the humane culling of the animal makes it a generally acceptable farming industry. Altogether it made for a very interesting subject to read up on.
