Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Best known for his depiction of industrial areas, L. S. Lowry set the majority of his paintings in which area of the United Kingdom?

Answer: Northwest England

Lowry was born in Lancashire in the late 19th Century, and spent the vast majority of his career painting the areas close to where he was brought up, notably the town of Salford. Many of his works, such as 'Going to Work', depict urban environments in which people are not given a lot of individual character. This style led to the people in Lowry paintings being called 'matchstick men'.
2. Painting portraits, often an artist will request that the models remain in position for extended periods. Which of these artists is best remembered for his portraits?

Answer: Lucian Freud

After his family migrated from Germany in the 1930s, Freud would study his craft in England. Freud was a very private individual and only painted friends and family. This included painting many self-portraits, including "Man with Thistle" from 1946.
3. One of the foremost figures in 20th Century British art, Barbara Hepworth led a colony of artists in which Cornish town from World War II onwards?

Answer: St. Ives

Barbara Hepworth is best known as a sculptor, producing many of her early works in stone before moving on to metal later in her career. Hepworth and her family moved to St. Ives at the outbreak of World War II in 1939 and she lived their until her death in 1975.

In 1993, the Tate group opened a gallery in St. Ives, adding to their two galleries in London and one in Liverpool. The gallery is focused on artists who worked in the area, though much of Hepworth's work is found in the Barbara Hepworth Museum (also Tate-managed) nearby.
4. Augustus John, known for his etchings and portraits, was born in which country of the UK?

Answer: Wales

Augustus John was born in Pembrokeshire, in west Wales, in 1878. His sister, Gwen, was also an artist. John worked as a war artist during the First World War, but concentrated on painting portraits later in his life. Among the well known people he portrayed are Irish poet W B Yeats, American actress Tallulah Bankhead and T E Lawrence, perhaps better known as Lawrence of Arabia.
5. 'Peace - Burial at Sea' and 'The Fighting Temeraire' are works by which artist?

Answer: J. M. W. Turner

Turner was born in London in 1775 and is classed as a painter of the Romantic movement. His paintings included landscapes and seascapes, with both the paintings in the question being set at sea. 'Peace - Burial at Sea' was painted in 1842 and its usual home is London's Tate Gallery. 'The Fighting Termeraire' dates from 1838 and shows the sailing ship of that name being towed by a tug to be broken up.
6. Which member of the Young British Artists submitted a piece entitled 'My Bed' when she was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1999?

Answer: Tracey Emin

Tracey Emin rose to prominence in the world of contemporary art after the release of her piece 'Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963-1995', which consisted of a tent covered in the names of those that she had shared a bed with. Her work is known as very confessional and she bases much of it on her own life. This was typified by 'My Bed', which literally was her actual bed.
7. William Holman Hunt was one the founders of which British art movement?

Answer: Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood

The Pre-Raphaelites also included John Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti when they were founded in 1848. Their style included detailed work and symbolism. Among Hunt's works are 'The Light of the World', a depiction of Jesus trying to get through a long-closed door and 'The Scapegoat', showing an image based on the Biblical book of Leviticus.
8. Which of these British sculptors is easily recognised by his large, somewhat abstract, reclining figures cast in bronze?

Answer: Henry Moore

Despite some of his most famous sculptures approximating the human form, Moore rarely produced realist figures. Many of his works can be viewed around the U.K., notably at open air exhibits such as Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Although he earned a lot of money during his lifetime, Moore donated much of it to his namesake foundation, a charity for the promotion of arts.
9. Which artist, born in Liverpool, is best known for his depictions of horses?

Answer: George Stubbs

Stubbs was born in Liverpool in 1724, and developed an interest in anatomy which included the dissection of horses. This gave him an understanding of how horses' bodies worked, meaning that his paintings are a realistic depiction of the animals. Among his best known works are 'Whistlejacket', from the early 1760s, a thoroughbred racehorse belonging to the Marquess of Rockingham.
10. Which of these artists was also a great poet, and produced illustrations to accompany his 'Songs of Innocence'?

Answer: William Blake

Whilst he may not have been lauded during his lifetime, William Blake has been subsequently hailed as one of the most important foundational figures of the Romantic movement. He produced a great number of paintings on both religious and mythological themes, but is perhaps best known in the modern day for two volumes of poetry, 'Songs of Innocence' and 'Songs of Experience'.

His views towards the Church of England were controversial at the time (he was not a fan), and many regarded him as mad whilst he was alive.
